^^ If you bought a 120GB hard drive at retail, they're supposed to give it to you for free.

I didn't buy the hard drive, I bought an Elite and sold my old one to my brother.that one for $8 looks generic, not that it matters, but I've read about people getting ripped off and not getting the right software with it. That's why I didn't want to buy one from Ebay. Not to mention that almost all the ones on EBay are shipping out of Hong Kong. Screw that.[Edited on October 8, 2009 at 3:44 PM. Reason : .]

I bought an Elite too...my question is, what do I actually need this for? I can copy all my save games via a memory card, right? (have a friend with one). I can redownload any games or addons once Ive added my Tag to the new Xbox, and it should recognize that Ive downloaded this before and not charge me, correct? Ive redownloaded stuff before (after having my xbox fixed) and was not charged for anything.

The one and only time I ever wanted one of these was a few years back. There's a bug in the game Oblivion that lets you sell a book that you need in order to finish the game. Once you sell it, you can never find it again, thus you can't beat the game. I didn't know this and sold the book after I was 120+ hours into the game. The only way you could fix the problem was to use the transfer kit to copy the savegame file over to a PC and then open the save on the PC version of the game, use a cheat code to add the book to your inventory, resave, and copy back over to the 360. At the time the transfer kit was $60, so I never bothered to go to all the trouble. But yeah, I'd imagine the times when you'd actually need something like this are fairly few, and far between.

hmm...it's actually been a couple years since I bought mine cause I used it to download ncaa 08 rosters and copy them to the 360. Worked great and then EA added the locker in 09.

I redownloaded all of my stuff, and copied all of my save games via a memory unit I borrowed from a friend. Unfortunately it was the 64MB one (he got it with an Arcade he bought a few weeks ago when his died...thought those came with 256MB cards though?). Unfortunately, there are 3 Rock Band 1 songs (from the original disc) that I cant copy due to file size, so I would need a bigger size memory unit. If you have to get something, Id look into the memory unit...at least it has some use afterward (sharing saved games or being able to use your gamertag at a friends house without doing the recovery method)
