I love the maps laying on the ground everywhere

Must avoid deep fried anything. The Mt. Olive booth will have my business however. The wife and kid will probably split a funnel cake. I am excited to take the girl though so she can see all of the animals and stuff. Her first fair, not that she'll remember it. Probably find some kiddie rides too.
10/7/2009 3:02:22 PM
you don't deep fry your pickles????
10/7/2009 3:09:38 PM
First and only time I ever went was 2 years ago.... Would love to go again though.
10/7/2009 3:15:10 PM
deep fried butter, deep fried milky way, corn on the cob, lemonade are all definites. anybody have a recommendation on what fair meat to get? i've tried to the turkey leg and that didn't really do it for me.
10/7/2009 3:16:34 PM
i was introduced to the bbq sundae last year by a roommate...IT IS GUUUUUDD. definitely try it.
10/7/2009 3:21:33 PM
Fair food makes my stomach turn. I can't even stand the smell there. It smells like ketchup on the main causeway and people keep bumping into you or touching you.I honestly wouldn't go back if I didn't have a kid. I don't mind seeing the animals and the exhibits, though.Oh no. this and I voted yesterday...I have officially become old.
10/7/2009 3:22:33 PM
you can't be old, that means i'll be old soon!and i got a sausage dog that was amazing last time i went, but that was 4 or 5 years ago
10/7/2009 3:26:57 PM
^^^problem is i don't like beans or slaw...so it would really just be bbq...which i do like. still interested in other options though.
10/7/2009 3:28:22 PM
deep fried pickles are my main must eat; otherwise it's just whatever i'm in the mood for.my main stop though is the candy shack. i have always gone with my friend, but even though i'll be w/o her this year i have to stop as i've done it for the past 8 years. i'll get my husband a bunch of bullseyes from there
10/7/2009 3:28:44 PM
a red candy apple is all i have my eyes on this year, but i need suggestions of what else to check out at the dixie classic.
10/7/2009 3:29:56 PM
i have been making BBQ sundaes for years and didn't even know it...and it is damn delicious. where is it served at the fair--in the row of stands right as you enter from the main bldg? i'll have to stop and get one
10/7/2009 3:41:33 PM

I so LOVE the state fair...I have only missed in 1 time ever and I live in TN then (their state fair sucks)I always get... a deep fried twinkie, Al's French Fries covered in vinegar and ketchup (messy but so yum)last year I tried the fried banana pudding (yum)Also hit up the free hushpuppies and get a pickle.
10/7/2009 5:08:05 PM
candy apple (of course)deep fried peanut butter & jelly (or snickers)turkey leg
10/7/2009 5:14:53 PM
I think you should all come to the St. Pauls Fair restaurant in the row with all the church and civic organizations. Near dorton arena. We make a mean ham biscuit and i will cook you some egg or a hamburger (depending on what time you show up) if i am there that day working the grill. We also have vegetables and BBQ as well as BBQ chicken. We even have hot dogs (red like they are supposed to be) footlong or regular. And your money will go to help support my church and our outreach programs. Just look for the red and white place with the yellow flowers outside. I know...buy an ad...

this is one of the ONLY things i miss about nc i managed to go to the state fair for several years after i moved. but the last few years just havent happened.oh well, at least i have the houston rodeo coming up in march
10/7/2009 5:44:58 PM
i love the corn dipped in butter. I haven't gone to the fair in a couple of years though. Last time I went, we listened to the sham-wow (or whatever brand it was) "infomercial" longer than any other thing we did.
10/7/2009 6:44:01 PM
I'm really sad I can't go this year. I wanted some maple cotton candy

Funnel cake - oldie but goodie. Also, the 21st is the day that folks with military IDs can get themselves and up to four guests (I believe, may be more) in for free. Just a heads up to any of ya'll out there who can take advantage of that.

for Fair Meat, I have always been a fan of the steak sandwiches sold over on the other side of Dorton Arena. Delicious.
10/8/2009 11:03:37 AM
I might be flying back to NC just to go to the fair. Well and to get my snowboarding gear.
10/8/2009 11:21:25 AM
Gotta plug the Ribeye Steak Sandwich booth outside the Graham building and next to the Korn Kings. Sandwichs are six bucks and drinks are $1. All proceeds go to NCSU's animal science club, who work the booth. Best meal at the fair, and probably the best value for what you get, real food!

The Maple Cotton Candy is usually somewhere in the main building (the old one at the corner of blue ridge & western). My "to eat" list includes a fried candy bar, a pickle, a ham biscuit & brunswick stew from the Cary UMC booth, and a lime fizz (fresh squeezed lime plus simple syrup plus soda water....damn good). Plus players to be named later. Some combination of maple cotton candy, fudge, and/or one of those candy-loaded caramel apples will likely travel home with me for later consumption.

Anybody buy that iPhone app yet?
10/8/2009 2:28:50 PM
Oh in my earlier post I forgot the frozen apple cider (if its warm outside) and the hot apple cider if its cold. Yum...(it has to be the booth down by the village of yesteryear)
10/8/2009 4:06:30 PM
I'm probably going this year with my wife and her family. I always liked the IDEA of the fair, but I always hate being there. I always seem to miss the shit I would have liked to have seen, and get really nothing out of it but a ride on the ferris wheel and indigestion. I'll try to enjoy myself, but I should look at a schedule and try to get out there for the stuff that I'd like to see.
10/8/2009 11:21:12 PM
i like the fudge building
10/9/2009 12:12:26 AM

10/12/2009 8:12:44 AM
Funnel cakes!!!
10/12/2009 10:17:19 AM
Don't know if this has been mentioned or not...but Neomonde is going to have a food booth this year.I think one booth will be just breads and the other will be the meats (kabobs etc)
10/12/2009 11:51:59 AM
^While I like the idea of them being able to introduce their food to a wider audience, so it's great for their business, I'm not going to get Neomonde at the fair when I usually go there 2x/month anyway since it's 5 minutes from work for me.Besides, it's not fried.
