Depends on how diligent Microsoft is at keeping the definitions updated. Doesn't matter, how resource friendly it is, if they are slacking up on updating the definitions then its a waste of time. Personally I think AV is a waste of resources. So long as you don't go to any sketchy sites, don't use IE (Firefox w/ Adblock, Flashblock FTW), and don't download any sketchy files you should be fine.[Edited on October 5, 2009 at 1:18 PM. for the vast majority out there, free antivirus (be it microsoft, avast, avg, whatever) is better than no antivirus. IE's still the majority browser, so protection still has to be a priority. show me one intelligent user, and i'll show you 5 that click on those "OMG YOU'RE INFECTED, USE THIS POP-UP WINDOW ANTIVIRUS SCANNER NOW" windows.

Should be a pretty good alternative, and certainly worth putting on any machine without a paid antivirus already on it (or one that has expired).MSE is the same client as ForeFront, the enterprise AV solution. ForeFront is pretty damn awesome, it's on all my work machines. The biggest win by far is that is uses damn near no resources, and it doesn't entangle itself throughout your system on install like Norton and McAfee do. The quality of detection and removal is still not top tier, but I think that will improve dramatically as it rolls out to a wider and wider audience.

Has anyone else noticed that it detects any apple software of any kind as a virus? Made me lulz.
