i think there was a old thread but its long dead.anyhow, the premier was friday night, anyone else watch it?Pretty god damned boring imo. Theres like 1, maybe 2 characters that are interesting, but the rest are just so god damned lame. I cant imagine this being very exciting.I mean they're going to try to create drama because they somehow cant shut the door on this shuttle from the outside? I mean i know its scifi and all, but god damn if thats the best plot device they can come up with for killing someone, idk. Does not bode well. Then i guess at the end we learn the ancient ship is gonna jump from world to world every 12 hours. As they slide from world to world we'll end up with plenty of possibility for the ol' "lets stay on this habitable world" vs "no we gotta keep going" debate. Because the characters on the ship are so goddamned tired, i imagine they'll toss us some natives to keep us interested. I read somewhere that they aren't gonna do the whole alien thing this time round, so that leaves us with humans, ancients, and the ever overplayed replicators. As we know from the pilot, the ancients sent out ships ahead of our big ship in order to build gates on cool worlds. I'm sure they sent out replicators to do this, who by now will be their human hating selves and will have wiped out any humans living on near by worlds. The posibility of ancients is, as always, slim because they're all ascended dicks. It would be kinda cool, however, to encounter a half ascended ancient whos been out traveling these worlds alone and is now kinda nuts. Kind of a like a Q whos not all there. All in all, so far it looks like its part sliders, part sg1, part bsg, but none of the good parts. Unless they drop off most of the characters on a planet and then continue on, i dont have much hope. Kind of a bummer since sci fi tv has taken a pretty serious beating as of late.[Edited on October 4, 2009 at 11:48 PM. Reason : a]

Pilot episodes usually suck to begin with, so it will take a few more episodes to really get an idea of what's going on here. They still haven't even aired part 3 of "Air" yet so we don't know what's going to develop in terms of off world interaction.Supposedly 3 people are supposed to die within the first three episodes. Two episodes have aired and only that senator has died I think. So you'll probably see two cast members take a hit in the next episode. With that said there's also supposed to be a suicide by episode 6.The show definitely has some potential for its ability to get rid of people if things aren't working out. Explore a planet, shit happens, and then they don't gate back in time. At the same time, what I kind of miss from SG-1 and Atlantis is the defined team structure. With SG-1 you really got to know the characters because the show centered on the same four people usually. It was comforting. Now there's just this big cluster-f of people and it's all over the place. I kept having "wait, which guy was that, oh wait, no that's the other guy... wait... hell... rewind" moments when I was watching.Hopefully we'll start to see some order to things and there will be a defined set of cast members. They definitely need more of a hook though. This whole explore a new world every episode for only 12 hours thing will get old quick. There has to be some other ongoing conflict.[Edited on October 5, 2009 at 12:30 AM. Reason : -]

I actually think it looks like it could turn out to be pretty decent. I didn’t know they weren’t going to do the alien thing, but I think that’s a great move. It’s too easy to jump the shark when you have an overpowering alien you have to defeat.I think the casting was good, and the directing was better than past stargates for this pilot. The main problem, barring the usual sci-fi cheesiness, that I foresee is that the ship seems to have a lot of problems for the show to go past a season or 2 without getting stale. And regarding…

The whole puzzle in a video game thing was kind of dumb, but beaming him out of his house to the ship is pretty stargate. It was pretty common in SG1 not to waste time on something like how character y convinces character x to join the SGC. In this case (and in others) rather than spending episode time convincing a character that the stargates exist, you just beam them up. It saves time and fits with McNeil's character pretty well. SG1 was very focused on the 4 members of the sg1 team. McNeil (the gen who came to get eli), Carter (the commander of the ship), daniel jackson (guy in the vids eli watched) and Teal'c (not in the sgu premier). All of which were strong characters from the start. You get interested in them from the first ep.

i like stargate but this show looks lame. i think they are trying to make it more drama with the last of a lot of super smart character and having a shaky command structure.i always thought the whole 8th and 9th cheveron was lame. it doesnt fit with the original concept of 6 point to define a point in space and an origin
10/5/2009 6:45:49 PM
^ that reasoning itself was bs too though. You only need 3 points to define any location in space, so 6 points makes sense, but only if you're using 3 and 3.Anyway, the explained the 9 chevron thing as being like a "code" not an address.
10/6/2009 12:54:30 AM
^^ 8th chevron does make sense, since you need to tell it to use those points in a different galaxy. 9 chevron as ^ stated is basically just stated to be a code.
10/6/2009 1:17:18 AM
the plot kinda reminds me of original macross / robotech, that being said 1st episodes were meh, but I'll give it a chance.
10/6/2009 12:34:48 PM
What a boring snorefest this show is. Walking across sand for an hour is the best they can come up with?
10/10/2009 1:40:23 AM
yea, i dont know wtf those swirling sand dervishes were, or why when he passed out water came to the surface and he found the magic limestone shit. But I'm not ready to completely give up yet, I like that dude that was in 28 weeks later.
10/10/2009 2:03:23 AM
this 2nd episode was pretty lame, it’s the kind of episode you’d expect after a show has been running for a few seasons.
10/10/2009 2:58:30 AM
i like the show. however, im a sucker for pretty much anything stargate
10/10/2009 10:59:59 AM
^ so am i, but the last episode was terrible, for a show this new. They could have gone so many directions, but they chose telepathic sand storms? The thing that made stargate unique was how the aliens/space travel tied in with ancient earth mythologies. They need to stay along this line for the most part, with the occasional weird episode thrown in (like the SG1 episode with the people in catsuits that sang to mushrooms).
10/10/2009 12:27:00 PM
My take on the chevrons was that the 8th got you out of the Milky Way galaxy, and the 9th got you out of the "quadrant", or whatever the SG universe calls them. 7 was "go". I don't know if they do the coordinates first 1-6, then the final 3 area codes, or if the 7-9 come first. It's one of those one-sentence fixes that would make that plot hole disappear. Haven't seen the 2nd one yet, I plan on watching it tonight after Bender's Game But there were definitely a lot of issues with the pilot, like what most of you have said. On the flip side, TNG's pilot episode was awesome... I wish SG would take some tips from them -- and the SG movie.
10/10/2009 8:22:33 PM
So this is kind of like the DS9 of stargate. More drama. So they're in the delta quadrant?
10/10/2009 11:59:48 PM
To clarify, this was episode 3. Episodes 1 and 2 were combined for the "pilot" episode on October 2nd. In all total, episodes 1 through 3 are all parts of one mini-story called "Air".http://stargate.wikia.com/wiki/Air,_Part_3[Edited on October 11, 2009 at 3:59 AM. Reason : -]

10/11/2009 4:02:20 AM
^i know that was my point. I was saying this is the DS9 of the Stargate universe because it's more dramatic, and it's also akin to voyager for being way out.[Edited on October 11, 2009 at 11:21 AM. Reason : .]
10/11/2009 11:21:25 AM
ds9 was good thoughthe last 3-4 seasons of sg1 was the ds9 of stargate.universe is the voyager in stargate in that it has a continuing story and its poorly written.
10/11/2009 11:30:09 AM
I've enjoyed it so far but I'm new to stargate so I don't really have a basis of comparison. I could tell they are trying to go the BSG route with this new show though, more dramatic and weekly disasters at least to start with. I think the second episode of BSG was about finding water. well they can't do that again so they have to find limestone. I agree that some of the characters are pretty stiff but Rush seems like he'll be interesting, kind of a Baltar knockoff being a scientist of questionable morals. We'll see what comes of this...
10/11/2009 3:53:07 PM
^^^ Ah, my bad. I kinda skipped over the "drama" part of your sentence and connected it. However in general SGU is more like Voyager in a comparison just due to the nature of the being stuck on a ship heading in a constant direction basically exploring new worlds... yadda yadda...There's definitely some drama I'll give you that. We all knew that going into this version of Stargate though from what Syfy (ugh, I hate that name now) told us.I still think it's too early to cast a complete judgment on it, however if you look at the episode names so far and coming up, they better get with it soon. There's only so many episodes named after ship problems I can deal with:

10/11/2009 6:26:16 PM
10/11/2009 6:34:41 PM
^it wasn't the shuttle with the dead senator. it didn't have a gaping hole on the side, for one thing. and since the episode's online, i took a look at the last couple minutes, just to be sure.i, too, am curious to see what sort of bad guys are going to show up
10/11/2009 8:38:40 PM
I bet someone on the crew took the shuttle to try and rescue the guys that stargated to the locked out planet.
10/12/2009 12:04:08 AM
Damn, I had to go back and yep I was wrong:What I had thought was like a fire before was actually the shuttle's rear engine. You can also see what appears to be some shielding going on around the shuttle before it accelerates and flies off camera. My bad.I keep looking at this pic and keep saying to myself that Destiny is so huge, there's a lot of potential for exploring it and coming up with some crazy Ancient technologies.[Edited on October 12, 2009 at 3:22 AM. This ep was a little better i guess. They still insist on force feeding us backstory for characters we dont care for, but atleast this ep had a somewhat realistic source of drama. $10 says the ship repenishes its energy by pulling something out of the sun or some other ridiculous thing. However, it would be a good way for them to ditch some characters on a nearby planet.Just as long as they dont kill off lieutenant hot tits.

10/18/2009 6:23:35 AM
i predict it won't happen for quite a few episodes. but its inevitable. you can't just have things going wrong with the ship and exploring uninhabited worlds for the entire run of the show.
10/18/2009 7:57:35 PM

i totally assumed they were going to recharge via atmospheric friction or some such nonsense when they grazed the gas giant in the last episodewrongo
10/21/2009 12:05:25 PM
If it turns out the ship is capable of recharging itself though "natural" methods, I'll be a little pissed just because, at that point why would it ever be almost out of power? You'd think the Ancients would have programed it to recharge itself anytime it got below a certain power level. It's already bullshit that they're reusing the same problem they used in SGA. Oh look, they've jumped to an Ancient ship that's been dormant for thousands of years, too bad it just so happens to be however many hours away from being completely drained of power. Whatever shall they do?Liking the show so far though, but a lot of that is probably just "yay, more Stargate!" ]
10/21/2009 12:57:39 PM
Also, why wouldn't they have Daniel Jackson or any other number of experts of all things Ancient just use the stones to "jump" into the ship and help Rush with the problem? I know they want to drag this out as long as possible and probably don't want to overuse the stones as a plot device, but it always annoys me when they don't do obvious things in shows like this.
10/21/2009 1:29:27 PM
^^the ship probably had plenty of power to keep on truckin' until they gated on board. But yea, you'd think anyone rational would design an automated ship to refuel itself before life support and everything dies.[Edited on October 21, 2009 at 1:38 PM. Reason : p]
