I realize that Seth McFarlane is an evangelical atheist and all, but I don't think he did any fact checking this episode.Christianity didn't cause the dark ages at all, that can mostly be placed on the fall of Rome. In fact, Christianity was the only group preserving the classical knowledge. Not that truth matters at all in a comedy show, but I know people who would accept what family guys tells them as fact.
9/28/2009 11:20:10 AM
The episode was pretty trippy with all the different animation styles. I enjoyed it alot

^^ Still not true. There was a major dropoff after the Empire fell, true, because there were no real major nation-states, just warring tribes and peoples. But by 11-1200 or so Europe was past Rome technologically in basically every area, It just didn't have the huge engineering scale because none of the states were large enough or secure enough to spend so much money on civil infrastructure and architecture. Plus this line of thinking is extremely western centric. There was no Christianity in the Middle East (well a little there), India, China, etc. China was already ahead of Rome in many ways when the Empire fell. So if there were going to be flying cars and automatic poop removers by this time, Christianity shouldn't have hurt that progress much even if it was scientifically restrictive.[Edited on September 28, 2009 at 2:52 PM. so, they weren't imprisoning famous astronomers for drastically different lines of thought or anything, is that what you're saying?no, they didn't do anything like that at all.[Edited on September 28, 2009 at 4:19 PM. ^^ i know, but isn't that splitting hairs? like the Catholic Church all of the sudden up and decided to imprison dissenters? blah blah blah inquisition, i know.
9/28/2009 4:50:52 PM
if you want to say anyone saved the classical knowledge you really need to give that credit to muslim scholars, who basically reintroduced it to europe. the european clergy may have preserved a lot of the classical works but they certainly didn't really help to disseminate any of it back to the populace.and i'd really disagree with you that europe was past rome by the 13th century, hell central heating only came back around in the last hundred years or so where the romans used rising hot air to heat their entire building via chambers under the floor and in the walls from a remote heating source (ie no big fireplace in the center of the room relying on radiant heat) like we saw in europe until very recently.[Edited on September 28, 2009 at 5:22 PM. what was the disney/jews thing about?

The role of monasteries in the middle ages is debatable. They furthered scientific knowledge to some extent, but it was usually directly related to religion(the invention/refinement of water clocks to know when to pray). It's also worth mentioning that they served as an early post office system, allowing for the personal letters that fueled the enlightenment. At first I thought Family Guy had partnered with Disney for that part like they partnered with Lucas for the Star Wars parody. The anti-semite joke caught me completely off-guard and I spit what I was drinking. Haha.

I'm pretty sure there was a good stretch during which talking about the existence of a vacuum was punishable by death. (God is everywhere. There cannot be a place that contains nothing, since that would mean that God is not in that place.)I believe that the scientific advancement of Northern Europe is directly related to its distance and relative safety from the Vatican.I always enjoy the jokes that highlight the fact that Brian is a dog that hates himself for acting like a dog.[Edited on September 29, 2009 at 12:02 AM. 10/4/2009 11:51:48 PM
Wow, sue him for lies.Imagine if you could sue someone for lying on tv, or just sue them for getting their facts wrong.Every major news network would be sued out of existance just from the misinformation spread by their pundits. It'd be an amazing world, and a very boring one unfortunately.
10/5/2009 8:02:36 AM
"You been working out Quagmire?"
10/5/2009 9:22:04 AM
The jew thing is based on urban legend - and people have been sued for less. That fuckface seems to get a pass, why is that?

10/5/2009 1:15:20 PM
I was uncomfortably laughing hysterically at the Schindlers List bit.
10/5/2009 1:21:33 PM
An unremarkable episode for sure. Was there any real punchline to the last bit w/ Meg on the phone? I don't get the reference, if there is one.
10/13/2009 1:47:44 AM
Obviously her Russian spy code number was 2476. So "Shut up 2476" was a throwback to any of the hundred or so times Peter has said "Shut up Meg."
10/13/2009 2:51:22 AM
I guess I never saw that as a running gag.
10/13/2009 9:11:01 AM
Yea this weeks was alright, I think the beginning was the best, where they are fighting for a spot at the bathroom and then Peter doesn't have a reservation hahaha
