i've been working as a contract employee in rtp since last august. when i was hired on i was led to believe that i'd go permanent after 6 months. after 8 months i was promoted to a better job at the same company, under the same people (still contract) and was told that the new job would most likely become permanent in august. i found out friday that the position would be going permanent but that they wanted to hire someone with more experience. (the original job description said 3+ years of lab/process/manufacturing experience but they promoted me anyway because i had done well in the previous role) they said that i could/should apply (which i will) but it seems like if they were going to hire me they would have just gone ahead and done it. i am trying to stay positive, but have been launching an all out blitzkrieg on the job market.

while having a job and gaining experience has been nice, making less than a teacher with the benefits of a part-time mcdonald's employee (none whatsoever) leaves much to be desired.

also, if anyone is thinking about going through a temp agency to find a job, please PM me so i can tell you one to avoid.

right here, although Im very thankful I have a good job that pays decent and is actually pretty fun.

Ive been working in IT (server administration, light programming, security) for the last year which pays the bills but its not what I want to do. Im trying hard to break into investment banking as an analyst but the opportunities have been few and far between. I have a very promising opportunity that I just interviewed for and I expect to hear from them this week so Im keeping my fingers crossed.

For the last two months, my hours have been cut from 8 to 7 a day, but at least there's some opportunity for a little extra throughout the week. Also, the position within the company for which I applied has been closed without having been filled.

Yikes, I really slacked off right before I graduated, and I still had a 3.0. If I were you, with a gpa that low, I'd take some of the core courses for the masters program that you want to get into and make sure you ace all of the classes. You can do this part-time and establish a good working relationship with the professors of the masters degree program. If you prove that you can ace the classes, they'll let you into the program if you jump through lots of hoops.

I used to be slightly underpaid (first job out of college), but I searched for a new job and now I'm making Texa$. Just requires a little patience and confidence in interviews.

Being underpaid is common with your first job out of college. I took the get-in-the-door approach and just took a job that would build on my skill set. Since I had virtually no professional experience outside of the work I did on-campus, and what I learned at NCSU, they paid me slightly less than I was actually worth on paper. They did this because they could, because I just wanted a job at this particular company, and because the company had a high turnover rate for the position that I took. After working there for 1-2 years, I had established a large network of contacts, my resume showed professional experience from a reputable fortune 500 company with several references from upper management. It instantly earned me a 50% increase on the offers I received, even though the company I worked for wasn't willing to match or promote me, so I just followed the money like a good American. So even though I was underpaid, I was not underemployed, because the underpaid position launched me into a much better standing in the marketplace, because of the people that I knew at the company and their reputation as a leading medical software company.

That was my original impression, but they sent me off-site for training in june (which they never do for non-permanent employees} which led me to believe otherwise. Unfortunately, I've pretty much given up on my current company and am hoping to find greener pastures.
