I have been adopting 3 dogs and 2 of them are due for Rabies shot. Are there any low cost vaccination/rabies clinics? My vet has been charging me $20 per rabies shot and I would like to shop around.

there are some mobile clinics that do it on certain saturdays and stuff. i dont remember the name right now.

i know my vet here in rocky mount does rabies shots for $4 if you bring a couple of canned foods (human, not dog). but he only charges $9 for a shot anyway.

no matter where you go in raleigh/cary, it's going to be comparatively expensive...rent is significantly more expensive, and there's a lot of competition

go anywhere outside the triangle and you'll find costs cut in half...i was quoted anywhere between $400 and $700 to do some minor surgery on my dog and so i refused (it wasn't life threatening or anything)...my gf took my dog to her hometown vet in sanford and i was quoted less than $100 for the same procedure (which i eventually did)

They have this mobile unit that travels around to different areas in the Triangle and you can even get your dog spayed/neutered. I did this for my little dog, and I dropped him off at the mobile unit @ 9am on a Sat. and picked him back up at 5pm that same day. They were great and the cost was low! They gave him some of his shots he needed as well.

My dad's practice would do an annual rabies drive one weekend in the fall or spring. It was $5 or $10 per rabies vaccination. There would always be a big turnout.

^^^I've always trusted regular vet clinics doing regular rabies clinics more than some of the other low cost options out there. But having worked at a vet clinic you hear enough horror stories about the one time something went horribly wrong, like a shot reaction that wasn't monitored and a pet loses a leg, or the cheap surgeries where they don't do all the monitoring a regular clinic does & the cat died due to a heart problem later discovered during the even more expensive necropsy, or when someone ends up bringing their pet into the regular clinic right after getting surgery at a low cost option & they are wondering why their pet is in pain the next day after it got spayed & wasn't given any pain meds to go home b/c that elevates the costs.

I'm sure there are good low cost options out there, and researching them is the way to go, but I've heard too many horror stories and am now probably unreasonably biased against these sorts of options.

I wish my dog had only lost a leg.

He got his rabies at a regular vet, and just happened to be one of the 1-in-however-many-million freak adverse reactions. In case you have ever wondered, it sucks to wake up to go check on your dog that was clearly in pain the night before, and find him still warm and limber, but dead.

I wish a vet's attention were a surefire way to make shots completely safe. He was a good dog

I'm sorry to hear that.

I know some precautions are taken. Like at the clinic where I work the tech tells you about vaccine reactions and what to look out for right away, and over the short & long term period, then the doc repeats it in more detail, then the receptionist tells you again & gives you a hand out on it. With the option of doing benadryl or steroids depending on the type & severity of reaction that happens. And any pet that has ever had a reaction before usually gets benadryl half an hour before the shot, and has to stay at the clinic for at least 15 to 20 mins afterward in the lobby or in a room before we will discharge them.

1. we know that 3 is the max we can handle so we are not overstretching (we got the 3 dogs over a stretch of 9 years)
2. if we were irresponsible or cheap, we would not even keep them up to date on shots
3. if we didn't have passion or were lazy, we wouldn't even be saving dogs that are in need
4. i never said i couldn't afford it....but in this economy if one can save why not

i second POP-NC. we recently had our puppy neutered and i wish i had noticed beforehand, but i'm pretty sure a rabies shot was free with the neutering. we had his bordetella done while he was there and it was something low like $10.

I don't know about Raleigh, or wherever you may be, but in Greensboro you can take them to the pound any day of the week between 4pm and 5pm (or 3pm and 4pm, can't remember exactly) and get them done for 1/2 price ($10 per dog). However, check your county's SPCA, Animal Control, pound websites for their clinic schedule - there's usually 1 or 2 a month from May to November - they are only $5 per dog. I took my parents 2 dogs to the Guilford County pound for their shots last December when I heard about the 1/2 price shot hours. (You could always bring them to Guilford County if its convenient.)

You might could just google "______ county rabies clinic 2009" and get it easier. Either way, check for a clinic first! Then call the county pound and ask about the half price hours (if they have them). And if all else fails, just bargain with them for a 2 for 1 deal.

The store I get my dog's food from sometimes has a mobile spay/neuter clinic out in front. I think they do rabies as well. I am not sure. I am sure if you call them (Carolina Pet Supply in Garner) they can give you the needed information. 919- 773-0014

They also sell 5-6-7 way vaccines that you can give yourself if you are wanting to save a little money. I was thinking about doing this myself, but if for any reason I may need to board my dogs, they need records from a vet stating they have their shots.

^ doesn't record of your vaccine have to be filed with the county?

i grew up in orange county and we'd get notices every year from the county, not the vet, that our animals' rabies vaccines were due (and they were just an FYI thing...they said we were required to do it and failure to do so would result in some penalty...how they knew when the vaccine was due, unless it was filed with the county, is a mystery to me)

Regardless, the rabies vaccine (IMRAB-3 if I'm not mistaken) must be administered by/under supervision of a veterinarian anyway for it to be legit. Should the dog get attacked by an animal suspected of rabies, if the shot wasn't from a vet, it will be put down.

You can't just buy a rabies vaccine anyway... It's controlled and only vets and shelters and the like can purchase and administer it. Other shots are different, but rabies can not be purchased by just anyone.
