i don't think you can get a discount on the pills if you pick them up at the same time as your exam, so they're ~$50 then, but if you pick them up at a later time they're ~$25 with a slight discount if you buy multiple packs at once

health depts have sliding scale fees--this part might not be relevant to her, but if you are at a certain level of poverty and don't have medicaid, you can apply for the Be Smart Family Planning Program (provides contraceptives and some preventative reproductive care and testing for both women and men) online, at planned parenthood or at a health dept (i believe the income limit for Be Smart is ~$1600/month)

There are one or two that are on the $9 list at Target and Walmart. Mine is, its Sprintec 28. I switched to that when I found out we were losing our insurance and have been fine. Don't know about how much the exam costs though, should be <100.

it's really depends on which pill she likes most. From my experience with patients, choosing birth control pill is a trial-and-error process. Some people have to go through different pills before settle on the one that works for them. As far as efficacy goes, all of them have about 99% efficacy IF you're using them correctly.

Generic at CVS is $20 a month. Really not that bad.

Yes, however, they are $9 on the "$4" list. That is the cheapest you can get, unless the health department does free or cheaper. The only choices are sprintec or tri-sprintec.

health depts usually have a sliding scale. you can get contraceptives for free through the Be Smart program, which you do enroll in through the health dept, pp or dhhs.

Bingo. Switching medicines which adjusts your hormone levels isn't something you want to find yourself doing every month b/c one brand is $2 cheaper than another. This isn't a vitamin we are talking about here. How long until she gets insurance at her job? If only a month or two, fork over the cash for the time being versus having to deal with unpredictable side effects of switching.

A 3-month supply of Yasmin is about $120 w/o insurance, $30 with insurance. Generic counterpart is about $25/month w/o insurance.

Also, keep in mind 99% efficacy rate means 99% for an entire year of study. Not each time you do it you have a 1% chance of getting pregnant. Before I realized that I really didn't like my odds, given the consequences.

yea man, ain't worth the consequences....it happens to millions of people a year unplanned and will ruin the best part of your life.

I know someone who had an unplanned child, shit is sad and depressing what its done to her life especially, and the man as well. That's enough for me. Not to scare you, but the fact you're even asking these questions make it seem you're not ready, and that's okay.
