To make a game, say a FPS, that if you died in the online multiplayer, that you could not keep playing... ever. You could maybe keep playing team deathmatch or something, but there would be a real world mode - and when you died... you are dead forever in that mode. And there would be rankings and such so n00bs weren't playing veterans... and you could do a spectator mode into what would eventually be an epic campfest version of Highlander. This is what I think about on Saturday nights.

I'm sure that'd be a huge success.
8/30/2009 12:55:54 AM
well ever is a little ... silly but a ladder season of 4-5 months with a required amount of played time could be pretty sweet.
8/30/2009 12:57:58 AM
so after a few weeks everyone would be dead.
8/30/2009 12:58:34 AM
i think its a pretty good ideamaybe have a mode in call of duty where if you died it was over for a few months until you can renew your "energy" like in mafia wars (which i have never played)afterwards you can play normal modesbut how would they set up the map and how many players are allowed? i dunno
8/30/2009 1:14:08 AM
permadeath is a delicate situation. In an MMO or something, you might be able to handle it ( one of the first online LoTR concepts had permadeath planned, but the game got canceled )permadeath in a FPS is downright impossible. I can't even imagine how to deal with that one. Everyone would be dead within hours. And then you start having to make rules and situations for a permadeath in an FPS...and then its not really permadeath, is it?i just wanted to see how many times i could type 'permadeath' and get away with it.permadeath.
8/30/2009 1:36:22 AM
thats not called having balls, its called not having brains. that type of mode appeals to a VERY select few. even if it were 4-5 months blocks.
8/30/2009 1:38:00 AM
This idea... it's terrible.
8/30/2009 2:06:10 AM
Imagine this, you're working/going to school. It's been a long ass day, and all you want to do is go home and play this permadeath FPS. You've been thinking about it the past 8-9 hours and just know that you're going to kick some serious ass.Go home, grab your favorite beverage from the fridge, sit down, load up the game. Oh yeah, this is going to be fucking awesome. Log in. Sniping Camper gets you in 10 seconds. Man, fuck that game.
8/30/2009 3:30:03 AM
to lose hundreds of thousands of dollars making that game?
8/30/2009 4:52:33 AM
Why would people want to buy a game where they are effectively banned from playing the game simply because they die?
8/30/2009 5:10:32 AM
i'd be dead the first night i played. then i'd be sad.deep thoughts mildew.
8/30/2009 8:06:59 AM
Technically EvE is permadeath
8/30/2009 8:17:48 AM
Diablo had hardcore mode. Wasnt a FPS, but still.
8/30/2009 8:38:15 AM
I alwas thought this would be a cool idea. people would be a lot more "realistic" in how they played instead of just running and shooting as much as possible.of course it would suck if you played for like 30 seconds and got picked off, but then there could be other modes and you can play again the next day, like LoRD on the old BBS or whatever.
8/30/2009 9:33:02 AM
http://www.urbandead.com has permadeath at select times. its a zombie rpg where if humans die, they become zombies, but can be resurrected/cured. for permadeath they open up a "city" and you register a character there. then the city is quarantined (no more registrations) and you cant revive humans. then, i believe if you have the headshot skill and kill a zombie, it is permadead.of course, they have the normal city of Malton for all of your urbandead needs if you die in the quarantine
8/30/2009 9:54:38 AM
I think the only way it would be remotely successful is to just lose the character, not the ability to play.I believe someone mentioned Diablo Hardcore...if you died, that was it. That character was gone. You had to start over from the very beginning. No one would ever spend money on a game that if you died once, you couldn't do anything with it anymore.Well...maybe you would, but no one else would
8/30/2009 10:18:06 AM
I wish a game developer had the balls to make a game where, whenever you die in the game, it cuts your fucking dick off. That's a million dollar idea.
8/30/2009 12:14:14 PM
8/30/2009 12:30:20 PM
dont you get it?if you die in the game, you die for real!
8/30/2009 12:54:52 PM
This is horrible, this idea.
8/30/2009 1:26:52 PM
i seem to remember a mech game where if you didn't punch out before your mech blew your game was basically erased.

DUNGEON CRAWLThe permadeath will make you want to slit your wrists. But at the same time, rerolling is pretty fun because there are so many races and classes and quasi-procedural gameplay.I've poured probably over 100 hours into this game. Just beat it a few weeks ago (and it took over 20 hours to beat it with one character)

i LOVE the idea of permadeath in MMO... for your fucking character... you should always be able to re-roll, so....

A smart company would make death permanent, but make it so that you can buy life/energy for some negligible amount like $.50 or something.aka, How to make a billion billion dollars. You're welcome CliffyB.[Edited on August 30, 2009 at 11:52 PM. Reason : l]

Make a billion... or just lose their shirt as everyone jumps to company B's product in less than an instant.Maybe if all the gaming companies colluded... EDIT: Of course is some ways this is happening. Release a game and nickle-and-dime everyone for "unlockable extras" that used to be standard fare.[Edited on August 30, 2009 at 11:55 PM. Reason : -]

Nah.You just got to market that shit properly.Make people want to pay the fifty cents.Like a rite of passage the first time. And every time after that they're just proving that they're not a n00b.And then get to a point where they pay, but they keep it a secret so people don't know that they're not indestructible. You could even give the game away and just count on making your money selling life.[Edited on August 31, 2009 at 12:31 AM. 9/1/2009 2:28:02 PM
So to elaborate on my initial post...ie. Call of Dutyyou select "Highlander" mode, you get dropped into basically a Free For All with 5 other guys who are all the same level (by level I mean how many rounds they have survived and won in Highlander mode)... fight until only one is left. This one guy gets to level 2 now, and enters Highlander mode again, this time against guys who have won the level one match... and so on and so forth. The losers in the initial match can still play all of the other multiplayer modes, just not Highlander - until it resets at some date or something.

it's called permadeath and it is the most maligned idea in the MMO industryif someone stepped up to the plate (ORIGINAL EVERQUEST, I'M LOOKING AT YOU FUCKERS) and implemented this in a serious, hardcore, but determined fashion it would open up a whole new niche in the market
9/2/2009 12:29:19 AM
here is how i would like to see permadeath possibly used in an MMOwords.#1 - Jedi Master version - lets say you have a population of characters from Levels 1-60. -Level 1-39, good try but if you get hit with the permadeath you just get to start all over and try again. now permadeath doesn't have to be the only form of incapacitation, but at some point it becomes a very real possibility that permadeath is right around the corner and its up to you to avoid it if you want to keep leveling up.-Level 40-60, congrats you superbadass. you've logged some fucking hours, huh. well guess what? when you get hit with the permadeath, you get the option to stick around, albeit in a different capacity. maybe you're a glowing blue ghost who walks around and helps others. maybe you get some cool new abilities (different Ghost Levels 1-40). maybe you just want to cause grief to your killer and follow him around everywhere he goes telling dead baby jokes. it could actually be a goal to get hit with the permadeath at some point if your party needs some ability they can offer. plus maybe you get the chance to create a new "alive" character at the same time. or maybe your new "alive" characters gets this old blue glowing man as a "pet" in MMO terms. anyway...#2 - Heaven and Hell - Let's just say for arguments sake the game takes place on Earth and subscribes to some form of religion where the Afterlife exists. You can make it work in any situation but its the most easily relateable. Your Earth character does his best to level up but lets say at some point he eats it. An old man in a white robe is gonna ask you whether you want to go "up or down" and depending on your choice you just became a Demon Lvl 1 or an Angel Lvl 1 and you've just opened up an entirely new world of gameplay. and maybe you can earn your way back to Earth too eventually.just my two cents from what ive always wanted to see.
9/2/2009 1:59:52 AM
^those are some pretty interesting ideas, but what is the incentive to say level up to 39 and die and go to heaven/hell when you can just do it at level 1?
9/2/2009 7:06:00 AM
well glory/bragging rights are usually the goals of mmo's where the traditional "win" is not possible so at some point you're going to have to have experienced Earth, Heaven, and Hell and then decide where you want to put your full attention to. Do you want to be an Overlord of Hell, a Protector in Heaven, or a great Warrior on Earth or do you just want to weave in between them all as you please.lets say you get up to level up to 30 on Earth before you die, yeah you start at Lvl 1 in Heaven/Hell but whatever the mechanism that allows you to go back to Earth after awhile you'll still get to go back to being Lvl 30. you won't have to start over every time you go to a different realm so to speak. So dying isn't the end of your adventure in one realm, it's the continuation of your journey through another.
