is there any chance the sport gods will make this happen?

probably not.

everyone was talking about that happening during the olympics, too. as long as he can set new world records, i don't see him switching to a sport where he could potentially make less money (and increase the chance of injury).

He would suck.

He's never played football. Plus he would probably be broken in half.

He gets paid every time he breaks a record...which is why he cruises into finishes. He doesn't want to obliterate it.

limited data available on the intertubes, but I did catch this:

http://blogs.smarter.com/sports/2008/08/19/usain-bolt-slowed-down-to-make-more-money-later/

1.8mil from Digicell

also: http://voices.washingtonpost.com/playback/2008/08/sure_hes_fast_but_can_usain_bo.html

Bolt's performance has already earned him a major endorsement offer from British cable company Virgin Media

I think he'd be a successful KR/PR for sure. His acceleration is just unreal. Remember Michael Bates was a bonafide pro bowl KR and stud on punt coverage and he couldn't break 10.0 in the 100m. I'm pretty sure a guy running 9.5's could learn to make 1-2 cuts.

KR's would get killed with tackles, i think WR would be better where he'd just run straight and force them into prevent coverage

AMURICA IS THE ONLY COUNTRY WITH MARKETING!

Antonio Gates made the leap from no football in college to pro bowl pretty well...yeah he played high school ball, but don't go acting like he didn't have to relearn the game to play in the NFL. i know it's not the same for bolt, but it's not like you have to really learn a lot of shit to run 40 yards down the field (i think we can all agree he's not going to be crossing the middle on under routes or anything if he was to try it)

WR is a serious skill position. Speed is obviously a factor but for every Raghib Ismail who was able to parlay pure speed into ANY Wr value there are 10x as many in the mold of Jerry Rice/Chris Carter/Art Monk/Marvin Harrison who used their overall skillset to offset their lack of straightaway speed.

KR's take much less harder hits than WR's. Yes KR's can get blown up from time to time but for the most part they are running full speed and get tripped up, pushed towards the sideline, or dragged down.

WR's are the ones taking the monster shots from LB's when they go across the middle or headhunting safeties.

KR/PR is the place he'd have to play unless he has the athleticism/skillset to play CB which is possible but unlikely.

^i disagree. WR's DO take bigger shots, but not if they're only going for the deep ball. He would clearly be utilized for long bombs as he could beat anyone down the field. The biggest shots in any part of the game come from two people running full speed that collide head on. There is no way if he is running deep he will take one of those shots, where as a KR/PR he could have one bad time and be done

Bolt is 6'5 so he certainly COULD be used sparingly as a deep threat/decoy based on height/speed but he also weighs 190.

I don't doubt he could add some size/upper body strength if he trained for it but it may come at the expense of some of his only known weapon (speed) and he's highly unlikely to develop NFL level WR technique, learn a complex playbook, and develop hands/instinct to catch an NFL deep ball. Even standout college WR's that are first round draft picks struggle their first 2 years to adjust to the level of physical contact at the line and the precise route running required for timing passing attacks in the NFL.

Look at the top 100 WR's (~3 per team) in the league and note how many of them are one dimensional speedsters rather than sure handed precise route runners.

Best case scenario he would fill a role like Drew Carter for the Panthers. Run a fly that the entire defense expects, hope to catch 2-3 deep balls a season/draw pass interference, and distract the safeties enough that someone can get open in the slot.

There are plenty of available WR's who can fill that void and not be COMPLETE liabilites on other patterns.

Now consider him as a KR where agility and acceleration are pretty much all that matter. If he can catch the ball and make one sharp cut he's a threat to take it to the house everytime he touches it.

I think

Quote :
"Or they could just knock him on his ass at the line of scrimmage."

is the key thing. The opposing team would just jam him at the line everytime because he's so scrawny.

There's probably a reason that none of these top level sprinter guys play in the NFL.

I mean, Bolt is way faster than everyone else right now, but Tyson Gay would run past everyone in the NFL too.

^^Drew Carter was a nice receiver at Ohio State but not so much in the NFL

And while Bolt is faster than Bennett or Carter, both of them played college football and still weren't great NFL receivers

My point is pure speed is great and you can't teach it, but if you can't run routes, take contact, throw blocks on running plays, etc, you're not going to be a very good NFL WR

^Drew Carter

good god he blew them out. and i dunno if he was still running all that hard, i guess he just doesn't look like it. but he's 23 now, i'm guessing speed goes down pretty soon after that. guess we'll see if he keeps getting better, but no he wouldn't be good at football probably

he'd suck in the NFL, but from the looks of it he can definitely run faster than both 9.58 and 19.19

he is about to run the 200 in a few minutes

Aug. 20 (Bloomberg) -- Usain Bolt broke his own world record in the 200 meters, running 19.19 seconds at the track and field world championships in Berlin.

It’s the second world mark of the meet for Bolt, who topped his own 100-meter standard by running 9.58 seconds four days ago. He set the previous 200 mark of 19.30 seconds at the 2008 Olympics.

jesus christ he is running times that the consensus experts believed were impossible just 2-3 years ago.

What's next an 18 handle?

People weren't sure 19.32 was breakable. Michael Johnson wasn't what I would call a once in a lifetime transcendent athlete but he's gone from being a legend to almost irrelevant in the past 12 months.

I bet he drinks himself stupid just thinking about it.

Usain bolt was on Top Gear a few weeks ago and weighed in at just over 210lbs.

Larry Fitzgerald is 6'3, 217
Randy Moss is 6'4, 210
Reggie Wayne is 6'0, 200

The dude grew up playing cricket, so he's got to have pretty damn good hands. And he's a soccer guy too, so he should be able to cut pretty well.

Probably won't ever happen, but I'd bet he could make it through to the NFL with a couple of years of serious training.

No worries, he can just become a punt returner, according to face

I didn't see the race; did he lose because he pulled up to coast with 15 meters to go?
