so I have shitty DSL at my new place - max download is at 230KB/secI'm trying to get some pretty big files off the net and I can't bear to wait this long. so i was thinking, if i bridged my DSL connection with my phone connection, at least it would be a little bit faster. it all made sense in my head.if i bridge the connections, how do i get the downloading app to use the full speed of both connections instead of just 1? the speed increase hasn't been that noticeable once i did bridge them - i know the phone can download at least 100KB/sec on the EVDO network so i'd notice the increase in speed.any ideas on what i can do?edit: i'd also like to throttle how much of the DSL bandwidth i use at any given time because it's shared and i don't want everyone else to get shitty speeds - if that's at all possible.[Edited on August 13, 2009 at 3:54 AM. i can't imagine it'd be worth the troubleand who is the cell phone provider?

You can't really achieve what you're looking to do by 'bridging'. You can set up a multi-wan load balancing solution, but even then you won't see the 350-400KB/s downloads that are in your head. I played around with this idea and pfSense when we had two T1s at my old place of employment. Essentially though you would tap out one of the connections and additional requests would spill over to the second interface. There was a 300-400 dollar dual/multi wan router solution put out by this one company (NexLand) [who was bought out by symantec] that claimed to do what you want seamlessly, but like ^ said, it's hardly ever worth the time or trouble. If the files are split up into rars, you could just queue half on desktop, half on laptop and transfer over a LAN at the end.[Edited on August 13, 2009 at 10:05 AM. he never said they offered 7megs downps be glad you get what you're getting df.. my parents house gets 150KB/s down at best via DSL[Edited on August 13, 2009 at 10:19 AM. Reason : a]

Yeah, my mother almost got stuck with an 'up to 512k' trickle of Embarq DSL until I realized Charter happened to service BFE, NC

yeah they can only get service through the local phone company which sucks fucking balls.. all of their services/prices are so outdated i can't even comprehend it. but with no competitors i guess they can do whatever they want.

Grandfather hit this perfectly. You want load balancing. Its not cheep. Normally you need some hardware. Ive done it before but it was with the cisco gear I have and a few hrs work (plus doing something thats probably illegal with my ISP...)

alright, thanks guys...

^My friend just moved to some boondock place outside of atlanta as well. Dublin, IIRC.Luckily, she was able to get a couple megs through comcast though. But yeah, it's way to expensive and troublesome to get an extra 100KB/s from EVDO. It's funny how you have barely enough copper for 2Mbit, but your signal is strong enough for 3g.
8/13/2009 12:29:37 PM
wasn't 4g just launched in the atlanta area recently? they're claiming average down speeds of 3-6mbps with peak speeds of 10mbps.also of note here, i believe current sprint 3g/evdo service is capped at 5gb per month. supposedly, the new 4g/wimax will be truly unlimited. so, even if you could get this working with your current service, it's not like you could use it but so much...

fuck i might get 4g - it's only $10 more/monthdo any phones do it or just the modems?
