It's like a cross between a helicopter that can't autorotate and a plane with an absurdly high glide speed.

^^Hai, obviously you don't know that either of those engines is strong enough to power both propellers if one goes out, and the Osprey has shafts that run through the wings to allow this to happen. So in short, if one engine blows, the other can turn both props.

I'm sure folks that saw the Northrop Flying Wing said "Dadgumit that tailless plane will never fly!" too.

I just googled this osprey plane..

I thought that thing's been in use for a long time now (or something similar to it at least)

nothing like a tilt-rotor aircraft that can neither glide nor auto-rotate.

it's not so different from fixed-wing aircraft that are inherently unstable

I'm not an expert in the V-22 but I do understand that it's glide ratio is worse than pretty much everything except the space shuttle, the rotors cannot store enough energy to autorotate should both engines fail in the vertical flight mode (much less the 60 degree pitch up used for slingload operations), and it is susceptible to vortex ring state.

The only thing it has going for it, over traditional rotary wing a/c, is it's speed.

That being said, the people I know who use it, LOVE it. So. Yeah.

why shouldn't they? as long as everything's working as advertised, it's a fantastic aircraft

While the speed is an advantage, it's not the only thing this aircraft has going for it. The big appeal to the MC is that it's range provides over the horizon capability.

As well, it's capacity for external lift is greater than 2X the medium lift helo that it's replacing.

My plane is almost 50 years old, but its a good sturdy platform. The airframes have been reinforced to increase their lifetime until the P-8 comes into service.....anyways though...I wouldnt fly an Osprey, I dont like the design and Im an aerospace grad and a pilot

Is the Osprey perfect? Of course not. It is the second of a new type of aircraft (the first being the PoC Bell aircraft). It isn't going to fly easy, but like most new things, the next generation will be better. Did the Wright Flier fly long or fast? Was the F-104 or U-2 or SR-71 a fun plane to fly? No, but they all pushed the envelope of flight...just like the V-22.

It is expensive though.

The Airforce V-22 is a Cadillac compared to the USMC V-22.

The airforce one has more computers and electronics, it isn't as rugged as the USMC one, but iirc they haven't lost any.

weeellllll. There are other options for that. I've worked with the 22 and it's lift capacity is impressive, but a lot of aircraft can out-lift the CH-46. Hell, the Blackhawk can nearly out lift the 46.

Furthermore, the V-22 has an operational readiness rate of 57% to 68% and an overall full mission capable rate of only 6%. Not exactly stellar.

when i flew to lejeune it was for the standing up of the MARSOC unit down there. they flew us down in the corps versions, left the rear hatch open the entire flight down....we never went above 10k feet but it was still pretty awesome to be the guy strapped in at the very end of the bench at the back and looking down most of the flight

i have a video somewhere, ill have to post it up on youtube

I was in Yuma,AZ in 2000 when that one crashed out there killing 19. I was working on the flightline and saw it take off...first one I had ever seen. Sad day.

Quote :
""
A V-22 loaded with Marines, to simulate a rescue, attempted to land at Marana Northwest Regional Airport in Arizona on 8 April 2000. It descended faster than normal (over 2,000 ft/min or 610 m/min) from an unusually high altitude with a forward speed of under 45 miles per hour (72 km/h) when it suddenly stalled its right rotor at 245 feet (75 m), rolled over, crashed, and exploded, killing all nineteen on board.[8][9]
The cause was determined to be vortex ring state (VRS), a fundamental limitation on vertical descent which is common to helicopters. At the time of the mishap, the V-22's flight operations rules restricted the Osprey to a descent rate of 800 feet per minute (4.1 m/s) at airspeeds below 40 knots (74 km/h) (restrictions typical of helicopters); the crew of the V-22 in question exceeded this operating restriction with a rate more than 100% greater.[10] Another factor that may have triggered VRS was their operating in close proximity, which is believed to be a risk factor for VRS in helicopters. Subsequent testing has shown that the V-22, and the tiltrotor in general, is less susceptible to VRS, the conditions are easily recognized by the pilots; recovery from VRS requires a more natural action by the pilot than recovery in helicopters, the altitude loss is significantly less than for helicopters, and, with sufficient altitude (2,000 ft or 610 m or more), VRS recovery is relatively easy.[1]
As a result of testing, the V-22 will have a descent envelope as large as or larger than most helicopters, further enhancing its ability to enter and depart hostile landing zones quickly and safely. The project team also dealt with the problem by adding a simultaneous warning light and voice that says "Sink Rate" when the V-22 approaches half of the VRS-vulnerable descent rate.[1][quote]

"MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. — The Marine Corps says an Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft sparked a grass fire at a North Carolina bombing range, resulting in minor damage.

The MV-22 Osprey can take off like a helicopter and fly like a plane.

The spokesman for Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point said Friday the aircraft's very hot exhaust ignited the grass fire while it was either taking off or landing. Spokesman Mike Barton says the aircraft may have been slightly scorched, but did not catch fire and was not badly damaged. No injuries were reported.

Barton says the Osprey was on a training mission at a Dare County bombing range used by Navy and Air Force aircraft.

A spokeswoman at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base had no immediate information."

They should make a super-realistic flight simulator game based on this one plane and release it to the masses as "The Hardest Game Ever Made."

Level 1: Start it up without catching on fire.

these things fly over the farm occasionally. they are loud as fuck.

also i just remember the program to build them was ridiculously overbudget (even by government standards) and they crashed all the time.

did they crash all the time, or were the initial crashes just widely reported on by the media due to the high profile of the Osprey program?

I'm currently in a Primary squadron, as an IP. The Marines who select MV-22 go to Whiting to learn helicopters before coming back to corpus to learn multi-engine flying. Then they go to the V-22 FRS. (In cherry Point NC I think....) It's a pretty extensive training program.

The Osprey is an inefficient design for cargo/transportation. If a VTOL unit is required, just use the CH-53E. The CH-53E can't go as far or as fast, but it can carry a heavier payload and is more reliable.

It's role would work best, however, on a UAV scale where it carries surveillance and/or a few munitions.

^^the best drone design I would think would be a multicopter (4 or more rotors)
Preferably a octo so there is redundancy in case a motor fails.
