It stays in the air with well wishes, and good luckRIP to all of the test pilots fucking terrible design.

I, too, first think of Odell Lake at the mention of an osprey[Edited on August 6, 2009 at 4:39 PM. Reason : SPELLING ERROR EXPUNGED]

i rode in one from DC to to Camp LeJeune and back about 3 years ago, it was pretty fucking awesome.[Edited on August 6, 2009 at 4:51 PM. Reason : .]

It's like a cross between a helicopter that can't autorotate and a plane with an absurdly high glide speed.
8/6/2009 4:56:49 PM
hey guys, lets make a plane that two engines that rely on each other and if ones goes out it crashes.
8/6/2009 4:57:17 PM
EMCE the whistleblower.
8/6/2009 5:16:55 PM
^^Hai, obviously you don't know that either of those engines is strong enough to power both propellers if one goes out, and the Osprey has shafts that run through the wings to allow this to happen. So in short, if one engine blows, the other can turn both props.I'm sure folks that saw the Northrop Flying Wing said "Dadgumit that tailless plane will never fly!" too.
8/6/2009 5:19:42 PM
EMCE do you work for Bell?
8/6/2009 5:24:58 PM
I just googled this osprey plane..I thought that thing's been in use for a long time now (or something similar to it at least)
8/6/2009 5:32:42 PM
it looks cool, which is all that really matters
8/6/2009 5:35:32 PM
I googled it too. Apparently it is first and foremost a new jersey shore hot spot.
8/6/2009 5:37:57 PM
nothing like a tilt-rotor aircraft that can neither glide nor auto-rotate.
8/6/2009 5:39:19 PM
it's not so different from fixed-wing aircraft that are inherently unstable
8/6/2009 5:45:03 PM
I'm not an expert in the V-22 but I do understand that it's glide ratio is worse than pretty much everything except the space shuttle, the rotors cannot store enough energy to autorotate should both engines fail in the vertical flight mode (much less the 60 degree pitch up used for slingload operations), and it is susceptible to vortex ring state. The only thing it has going for it, over traditional rotary wing a/c, is it's speed. That being said, the people I know who use it, LOVE it. So. Yeah.
8/6/2009 5:54:22 PM
why shouldn't they? as long as everything's working as advertised, it's a fantastic aircraft
8/6/2009 5:57:44 PM
8/6/2009 7:24:25 PM
My plane is almost 50 years old, but its a good sturdy platform. The airframes have been reinforced to increase their lifetime until the P-8 comes into service.....anyways though...I wouldnt fly an Osprey, I dont like the design and Im an aerospace grad and a pilot
8/6/2009 7:27:03 PM
Is the Osprey perfect? Of course not. It is the second of a new type of aircraft (the first being the PoC Bell aircraft). It isn't going to fly easy, but like most new things, the next generation will be better. Did the Wright Flier fly long or fast? Was the F-104 or U-2 or SR-71 a fun plane to fly? No, but they all pushed the envelope of flight...just like the V-22. It is expensive though.
8/6/2009 7:46:42 PM
8/6/2009 7:47:12 PM
the goddamn thing is ACHING to crash from the moment it takes off]
8/6/2009 7:49:50 PM
The Airforce V-22 is a Cadillac compared to the USMC V-22.The airforce one has more computers and electronics, it isn't as rugged as the USMC one, but iirc they haven't lost any.

when i flew to lejeune it was for the standing up of the MARSOC unit down there. they flew us down in the corps versions, left the rear hatch open the entire flight down....we never went above 10k feet but it was still pretty awesome to be the guy strapped in at the very end of the bench at the back and looking down most of the flighti have a video somewhere, ill have to post it up on youtube

grass fire fucktards osprey is awesome
6/21/2013 2:33:46 PM
I was in Yuma,AZ in 2000 when that one crashed out there killing 19. I was working on the flightline and saw it take off...first one I had ever seen. Sad day.
6/21/2013 2:41:18 PM
6/21/2013 3:14:24 PM
what a tragedy won't someone please think of that poor grass that needlessly perished??
6/21/2013 3:23:42 PM
They should make a super-realistic flight simulator game based on this one plane and release it to the masses as "The Hardest Game Ever Made."Level 1: Start it up without catching on fire.
6/21/2013 3:25:43 PM
these things fly over the farm occasionally. they are loud as fuck.also i just remember the program to build them was ridiculously overbudget (even by government standards) and they crashed all the time.
6/21/2013 3:25:46 PM
did they crash all the time, or were the initial crashes just widely reported on by the media due to the high profile of the Osprey program?
6/21/2013 3:27:26 PM
ALL THE TIME. Like at least 3 times a day.
6/21/2013 3:28:34 PM
Did they just dump a bunch of helicopter pilots into this program or what?
6/21/2013 3:29:06 PM
6/21/2013 3:34:55 PM
They should replace those props with turbofans so it looks like the HK from The Terminator.[Edited on June 21, 2013 at 3:36 PM. Reason : -]
6/21/2013 3:35:51 PM
^^thats just what the media wants you to think.literally thousands of these things have crashed.
6/21/2013 3:40:43 PM
6/22/2013 5:25:45 PM
its != it's
6/22/2013 7:26:15 PM
It is?
6/22/2013 11:50:38 PM
The Osprey is an inefficient design for cargo/transportation. If a VTOL unit is required, just use the CH-53E. The CH-53E can't go as far or as fast, but it can carry a heavier payload and is more reliable. It's role would work best, however, on a UAV scale where it carries surveillance and/or a few munitions.[Edited on June 23, 2013 at 12:33 AM. 6/23/2013 12:23:43 AM
good design for a drone? maybe not....
6/23/2013 11:02:12 AM
6/23/2013 11:06:42 AM
^^the best drone design I would think would be a multicopter (4 or more rotors)Preferably a octo so there is redundancy in case a motor fails.[Edited on June 23, 2013 at 11:39 AM. Reason : That first video is crazy..is there even a gyro in that thing?]
