Let me sell you my Total Money Makeover book that is full of common sense to your broke ass.Step 1: Don't Spend money. Ever.Thats it.
8/3/2009 9:34:28 AM
I love Dave Ramsey. But he really is just spouting common sense.
8/3/2009 9:38:46 AM
Common sense is generally in short supply in this country. Shocking, I know.
8/3/2009 9:42:21 AM
And that^ is why Dave Ramsey is so popular. "Why didn't I think to attack my debt before I spent all my extra money??"
8/3/2009 9:44:19 AM
If you never put your income and expenses in a format that you can look at, you never realize how much you're blowing on interest a year. And if you think about it, for decades I can't think of any sort of campaign that screams "INTEREST IS BAD. BAD FOR YOU!"No, we've been bombarded by credit card offers about how much power it unlocks for you, about all the stuff you can get, and buy a home as its a good investment. There just hasn't been any sort of force on the other side to let people know that it isn't good for them.
8/3/2009 9:47:34 AM
hahahahaha. I guess there is a market for common sense after all.
8/3/2009 9:48:43 AM
HORDE YOUR MONIES!!!!!!!!
8/3/2009 9:54:33 AM
I take it you have a lot of debt, and are being defensive about it?
8/3/2009 11:16:01 AM
income - taxes - fixed costs - allowance for unanticipated costs - savings - ohshitfund = money you can spend.
8/3/2009 11:20:56 AM
protip: if you want to pay down debt you put the money you can spend against the debt and dont get more debt.
8/3/2009 11:22:19 AM
The football team that puts the most points on the board is going to walk away the winner today.
8/3/2009 11:33:53 AM
If they want to get more points, I think the best strategy is going to be for them to score points, but at the same time prevent the other team from scoring points
8/3/2009 11:41:29 AM
im spending 0 dollars on interest because I don't have a credit card and I live off the grid.

I respect the guy.You have to consider his audience is the same as Rush Limbaugh's-- of course it's going to be aimed at dim bulbs.

I hate that guy. Bunch of idiots calling in and yelling "I'M DEBT FREE!!!" like we should all give them a cookie for taking seven years to pay off a sofa they didn't need to buy in the first place.

I think that Dave Ramsey preaches a lot of oversimplified advice. The thing is, his oversimplified advice is still orders of magnitude better than what most people do. So, no, I don't agree with a lot of what he says...but for the average dumbass, I guess he's a whole lot better than nothing. His teetotaler, potentially blinded by his own past, oversimplified approach is at best unnecessary, and often suboptimal/counterproductive. On the other hand, while a little red wine every day is good for you in general, it's probably not the best approach for an alcoholic on the road to recovery, which is why I say that for most people, his methods are, well...not terrible, I guess.
8/3/2009 9:14:27 PM
I think this thread is awesome. I mean, I wonder how many people on this thread who trash Dave Ramsey have made and saved more money than him after coming out of bankruptcy?
8/6/2009 2:31:07 AM
Well, I've never been bankrupt...that's one thing I have going for me.Regardless, his advice is often oversimplified and not optimal. It is probably better than nothing for the stupid masses...it's just that really being financially savvy is not difficult, so his "Not Totally Fucking Away Your Finances for Dummies Complete Retards" approach can be a little silly. Yeah, his advice is counterproductive to the small minority of us who actually know what we're doing. It's less than optimal, but far better than the catastrophic status-quo for the majority of people who chronically fuck away their financial well-being.
8/6/2009 1:25:05 PM
The big problem with Dave Ramsey is that if you move to using cash only, have all bills paid off, no credit cards, and your house is paid for, after a few years you end up with NO CREDIT.He acknowledges this and says "oh there are ways around it, go here here and here and these people will loan you money"
8/7/2009 8:07:37 AM
yeah, deemarie just bought a car and she could've paid cash for it, but she financed some of it to build some credit. otherwise, we'd never be able to get a house.
8/7/2009 8:16:07 AM
If you're at the point where you have your home paid off you'll have no problem getting credit. If anything you could get a HELOC at a rate lower than a big bank will give you on a standard credit card.
8/7/2009 9:02:06 AM
His advice is just so counterproductive and less than optimal. And AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA at eyedrb.
8/7/2009 9:31:02 AM
Leave it to me to make this partisan, but for reals-- how can AM pundits champion personal responsibility when it appears that a large segment of their listener base are complete financial morons.
8/8/2009 10:58:36 PM
Now is the time to buy and use credit.
8/8/2009 11:10:59 PM
You do realize that a lot of these morons you mention boone are making an effort to be more responsible. Some people just need a plan. I didnt have any credit card debt, have always paid off my balance every month and really do not live beyond my means. However, I came out of school with a ton of student loan debt, and when we bought our home we only put 10% down and took out two mortgages. At the end of this year Ill be debt free except my first mortgage. So you can laugh at me, call me names, etc. But the big part of doing this is not really caring what people think about you, your lifestyle, or what you drive...esp from broke/dependent people.
8/8/2009 11:14:04 PM
You are nowhere near typical of Dave Ramsey's callers."But Dave, I needed that new boat!"
8/8/2009 11:17:37 PM
Yeah, it is sad to hear the mess people get themselves into. But they are at least reaching out for help and a plan to correct thier mistakes. It is far easier to play the victim role and say the bank shouldnt have lent you the money for the boat, etc. Imagine for every "moron" that calls in how many thousands dont or even think they are getting themselves in trouble. Habitual, "Well I can afford the payments"....type people.Dave doesnt do anything special, he just offers advice and helps people put aside thier emotions/stress and look at thier mess rationally and give them a plan. Feeling empowered about taking control of thier financial lives instead of feeling helpless and running from collectors. Personally I cant imagine what kind of stress that shit would be, or to be facing foreclosure or bankruptcy.Although I had a guy I went to optometry school with filed bankruptcy. He asked me for a ride to the attorneys office one day and told me all about it. He charged his tuition from undergrad, living, etc.. and was going to file. He acted pretty upset over it. However, I found out he went to mexico for spring break after that meeting and then had a brand new leased truck after the bankruptcy went through. Totally irresponsible and I really dont think much of people that behave like that. Everyone makes mistakes, but acting like children isnt a behavior worthy of respect or sympathy. imo

^^From every post I've ever seen you make, I think you're just one of those people that disagrees for the sake of being different. Do you really believe that telling people to be more thrifty and to not rack up debt is counterproductive? You actually think that?
