I'm wondering how much mileage a person can expect out of a 1996 4runner before a rebuild may become necessary. I'm looking at one that has over 240K miles on it, but there's another one with about 190K for $1000 more.

as long as the head gaskets last usually.or until the timing belt breaks bc somebody didnt do change it soon enough

240k, iKnow they can go for along time but damn. is it a 4wd? you might want to see how the drivetrain is first too.

It is a 4WD but looks like the kind that's never been used except maybe for snow & ice.

this is such an abstract question. it almost entirely depends on how the vehicle has been maintained and treated. even if those things are known, it's still a stab in the dark at best. it could go another 5k or another 150k...

fo runnah's ftw. compression test that shit.is the 240k one white and really cleanly kept? if so it's my buddiesi hear 4runners are non interference engines. so if the belt breaks.. no biggie. lol my dad isn't changing his till it breaks.[Edited on August 3, 2009 at 8:22 PM. Reason : .]

^They're really not hard, at least for the 3.4L v6. Just a little time consuming for an amateur, but unless you make $texas or don't have time it's very worth it in the savings.

They go exactly 387,549 miles between rebuilds.

i got 387,551

The fucking 3.4L 5VZFE engine sure as hell IS an interference engine.Dad just ditched his '95 T100 with 420k miles. Head gasket blew a couple of years ago, and I block sealed that bitch. Gave way a year later, and I did it again. Drove it until he decided he'd had enough of riding around in a piece of shit (that and he has a heart condition and doesn't want to get caught in the middle of nowhere) and swapped it out doing the Cash for Clunkers thing. 4500 bux credit for that truck is MONEY. Still didn't use any oil except for what it leaked. He got an '09 Honda CRV. My dad, always the practical one.

interesting.. i will tell this info to my dad. dont want him to bust his ride
8/8/2009 7:39:25 PM
my '85 with a 22RE lasted until 231k before the timing chain brokeI got it 1 year earlier with 211k on it, ASE certified mechanic ownedI guess he didn't like to work on his own crapbtw, timing chain intervals should be changed at 120k, so maybe it got done, maybe it didn't..only he knows
8/8/2009 9:26:19 PM
is the timing chain really expensive to fix?
8/9/2009 12:05:24 AM
if it breaks on an interference engine, yesor if you pay someone else to change it for you, it can be, depends on their rate and your perception of expensiveif you do it yourself as a maintenance item before anything breaks, not really
8/9/2009 1:16:42 AM
or just drive it
