I was wondering what the difference between the learner's permit and the license were (other than the rider's test). I figured I couldn't ride my bike over to the DMV to take the skills test if I had no permit at all, so I assume this means I have to get the learner's permit first? Also, what are the restrictions on a person with a learner's permit? Are you limited to particular hours of operation or particular roads? Thanks for your help.

i'm pretty sure this is available on the NC DMV website and a simple google search would give you your answer, but i'll be nicethe only other big difference between the permit and the license is that you can't carry a passenger with just a permit

You have to take the written test first. There are certain days where you can take the riding test. The learners permit is good for one year, no passengers, no other restrictions. Pass the written test and that's it, $15 I think. Do study for it, the test has some common sense stuff but also plenty of BS that's not really intuitive or helpful:Example: "46% of motorcycle crashes involve the following: A.) Car pulling out in front of you. B.) Deer or wildlife C.) Slick or wet roads D.) Alcohol"

go take the motorcycle safety foundation BRC at a community college or somewhere local and they waive the riding portion plus you will pick up a lot of good skills and tipshttp://www.msf-usa.org/http://www.ncmotorcyclesafety.org/BRC.htm[Edited on July 25, 2009 at 10:04 PM. Reason : other link]

Also, other states do not accept our permit. So if you plan on crossing state lines with just a permit, be aware of their laws.

maybe it was only in sc, but when I had my permit there you couldnt ride at night. you also had to have the permit for a year before you could go for your license.
