So my truck stopped running the other day. Stopped accelerating and eventually just turned off. Wouldn't start again and when i took it in the guy fixed the ignition coil and said that was the problem. I figured that i just damaged that from trying to crank it so much. What say you?

#1.) complete and utter lack of information on the vehicle#2.) doubtful - see #1.

an impressive kickoff for such an 'official' thread
7/24/2009 12:48:02 PM

a 1993 MX-3 RS 1.6L I-4. I want a second opinion before I just start tearing open this car and replacing all the "what I think it might be" parts. Yesterday the car ran fine. Today, I go to start the car and there is some SERIOUS knocking under the hood. I didn't let the car run more than 3 seconds the first time. I checked the oil thinking maybe it's low for some reason (maybe I lost a lot of oil before I parked it since I know it has a slight leak, I don't know). It was fine, resting just a hair below the full line as usual. I just changed the oil last month. No puddles of oil on the ground below. Just the typical dirt/oil residue on the bottom of the transmission casing from a slow leak somewhere. I have my wife start the car a second time while I look under the hood. It runs for about 10 seconds, the car sounds horrible and the knocking is extremely loud. I was unable to pinpoint it to one spot. Engine coolant expansion tank is full, the level hasn't budged from the full line since last year when I flushed it. Timing belt/water pump/tensioner all replaced a year and a half ago as well. With that said, what are my options as far as what could be wrong? I'm thinking oil pump failure, although I don't know much else what could cause this. Anything else I should look into that is easy to check out before I start dissecting the car? Thanks.Btw, If I could have the Alldata on oil pump R&R, I'd appreciate it.
8/9/2009 5:38:54 PM
it could have thrown a rod or dropped a valve
8/9/2009 5:42:41 PM
yeha sounds like the pump is gone. put a brick on the pedal and sit and watch. if you care about the car, its gonna take a tear down to really see if anything is fucked up inside
8/9/2009 5:46:44 PM
^^ It's SOHC, so maybe a valve dropped or something. But I mean, damn, this is just horrendous. I've invested maybe $3.5k into the car for the past 4 years. Honestly, is that bad for a 15 year old car in terms of upkeep? So for this year, I throw another $1k-$1.5k at it and rebuild the engine... what's the worst that could happen? Oh fuel pump going out spontaneously or transmission shitting the bed after the second gear synchronizer randomly detonates like a squirrel who accidentally mistakens a grenade for an over sized acorn... etc etc etc...
8/9/2009 6:01:52 PM
I drove my 92 civic 40k miles and put a built motor in it with turbo for less than you have spent fixing the mazduh. WTF are you doing to that poor car! rebuild it with rods and pistons
8/9/2009 6:14:08 PM
^^yeah them mazda autos fucking suck
8/9/2009 6:23:00 PM
come to thing of it... If I compression test it, that should tell me if a lifter is bad right?^^ lol... I'm not doing anything to it... ... yet... [Edited on August 9, 2009 at 9:05 PM. Reason : .]
8/9/2009 8:59:52 PM
it'll only tell you if a valve is hung open
8/9/2009 9:06:06 PM
The car vibrates too... >_> No CEL I guess I'll be taking the valve cover off and work my way from there
8/9/2009 10:04:31 PM
^^^^really?
8/9/2009 10:17:48 PM
I didn't see anything unusual when I popped the valve cover off. I'll take pictures again tomorrow. All the springs and rockers looked fine. The car doesn't smoke. It idles "normal", aside from the fact you hear the knocking and can feel the vibrations. The last time I turned the car off, everything was fine. Nothing out of the ordinary during shutdown. I don't have a compression gauge, so I'll buy one tomorrow and see what happens. If someone (ie: BBR, quinn, etc...) want to come over and take a look/help out with the situation, I'd greatly appreciate it. My knowledge of engines is limited and my personal experience with internal components even more so...
8/9/2009 10:48:25 PM
I can help you compression test it at the very least.
8/10/2009 12:21:39 PM
whatever it is, it's probably not worth fixing on that POS
8/10/2009 12:40:54 PM
You take that back meanie. That's like calling a girl a slut when you don't even know her...[Edited on August 10, 2009 at 3:11 PM. Reason : .]
