Need help. I have a pregnant sister about 19 weeks along and she's visiting from st. louis for a couple of months. She needs to get an appointment for a check ups right about now, but no one will give her one till like the end of august because she's a new patient. To make matters worse, she's losing her insurance by the end of next week and her new one won't start till sept.I called around some urgent care places, but they don't seem to do pregnancy visits. Any suggestions?

She should be fine missing an appointment unless she has any important testing due during the time that she is staying with you. Pregnant women are typically seen once a month, but women have been having babies for ages without medical care. Your sister needs to talk with her current doc about the situation.

What bottombaby said. Not like she's the first woman to ever pop out a kid. Just keep er away from the drugs, booze, and cigarettes.

what she needs done and the urgency of it depends on a) whether she is considered a "high risk" pregnancy or not and b) how far along she ishere's a good chart for the typical timeline of prenatal care in the uncomplicated, low-risk pregnancy:http://www.wellmark.com/e_business/provider/pdf/PRENATAL_Health_Maintenance.pdf

Does Planned Parenthood offer any kind of pregnancy monitoring?

Not sure, but it'd be worth checking. Even if they don't offer it in-house, they may have some suggestions for inexpensive care elsewhere.

Most county health departments offer care. They also base price on income and number of people in your household. So, you can pay anywhere between 10% of the regular cost and 100% depending on your income.

if they are not a resident of wake county they are still able to use wake county services? i seem to remember having to say i am a resident of wake county when i got some immunizations done there, can't remember if i had to show any proof though.

Sometimes they will cut you slack. My aunt was out of town for a few months once and got really sick and went to the local health department and explained her situation. They saw her as a temporary resident. They're usually really nice about it. If they can't see her, I'm sure they could refer her to someone.

My Obgyn did the same thing. it took 2 months to get an appointment, but when i found out i was losing my insurance and didn't know when I would have new coverage, they squeezed me in by putting me with a PA instead of an MD. Call and explain she is losing her insurance and is pregnant, so she may not be able to come for a few months, they will probably find time to get her in.

YES, planned parenthood does offer prenatal services!they will accept patients without insurance, and will probably give you less of a hassle about being a new patient.sliding scale fees, too.]
