Refresh it, it should come up now. And it was a Japanese freighter sunk during WWII. This is an entrance where you can drop down into the cargo holds.

I'm a SCUBA diver. Love diving and have recently gotten into freediving/ spearfishing. You would be suprised the number of wrecks in NC you can dive with no tanks. I know of at least 8 wrecks in the Wilmington area that I can freedive on down to 40'. You can also load up with fish by spearfishing as opposed to fishing with a pole.

I have a few more shots I'll post -- these were taken in the cavern of the Peacock Springs cave system in Florida. Note: overhead diving without proper training will most likely be hazardous to your health.

A buddy of mine in the cavern zone after our cave dive:

Taken far back in the cavern zone, not quite to the cave zone:

HOLLER

I'm a diver, most of my dives have been in FL and off the coast of NC. One of my most supercool dives was the Queen Anne's Revenge. Got to go on an archeological dive, very very cool.

who's up for a dive trip?

To anyone in the Morehead city area-

going diving on the radio island jetty this friday at 3:30 (high tide)

purpose of the trip is to spearfish like hell and harvest stone crab claws and urchins (the urchins are for catching sheepshead)

we'll have to dive out there sometime...i live in New Bern. I'll have my daughter for most of the rest of this summer, though.

That's me diving somewhere down in FL...can't remember exactly where that one was. I have a few more from the Puget Sound, but I don't think they're uploaded anywhere.

vertebrate/invertebrate sampling to determine species richness, size distribution, and reef restoration impact of restored relic oyster reefs.

Species of interest include xanthid and portunid crabs (ex, stone crabs and blue crabs, respectively), seabass, sheepshead, gray snapper, bluefish, mackerel, blah blah blah

we will also excavate oysters to determine size distribution.

The whole idea is to use a BACI (before-after-control-impact) design to estimate the effect of restoration on relic oyster reefs on local marine communities.

We have mountains of data to show that they are excellent for oyster growth (432% here in NC versus 54% in MD). The main question we are looking to answer is whether the artificial oyster reefs are merely shifting existing fish populations or if they are functionally increasing those existing fish populations.

NOAA gave us lots of moolah to figure this out, and so long as there aren't any catastrophic problems, we'll do just that.

Went diving on Cade's Reef, and an old French steam ship wreck in Antigua back in June. Saw big sea turtles, barracuda, several rays, and other common stuff. Pictures sucked though as we don't have a dive camera and we were using an underwater disposable camera.

^^ we're actually looking at that also. NC Sea Grant is a partner on the project and will be conducting both dockside and on-the-water surveys to determine where fishermen are coming from, what they are targeting, and their awareness of the artificial reef projects in Pamlico Sound
