Ryan Reynolds is the "Green Lantern"

Quote :
"Ryan Reynolds has landed the coveted role of 'Green Lantern,' getting the starring role in Warner Bros.' live-action film based on the DC Comics hero.

Martin Campbell will direct. The studio is still working on the picture's budget, but production is expected to begin in January.

The news caps off a memorable summer for Reynolds, who played Deadpool in 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine,' a performance that prompted Fox to begin development on a spinoff film. Reynolds followed that by starring opposite Sandra Bullock in the romantic comedy 'The Proposal,' which crossed the $100 million mark this week.

Warners and Campbell chose Reynolds, who vied for the superhero role along with 'The Hangover' star Bradley Cooper and Jared Leto. The momentum built for Reynolds in the last week, as he was the only actor whose option was extended.

Greg Berlanti wrote the script with Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green. Donald DeLine will produce with Berlanti. Reynolds' reps at UTA are working out his deal.

The actor will next star in 'Buried,' a dark indie drama that will begin filming shortly in Barcelona with Spanish director Rodrigo Cortes. Reynolds will play a civilian contractor who is kidnapped in Iraq and awakes in a coffin, struggling against time to coordinate a rescue even though he doesn't know where he's buried in the desert."

He looks the part, but I don't think he has the gravitas.

You don't think he has the gravitas to play a cowboy test pilot who can't hold a job and sexually harasses his boss?

^^ i don't think he has the gravitas to play a guy who became a test-pilot (a notoriously goofy profession i guess you're implying?) because he had severe daddy issues. A guy that did indeed have an affair with his boss, but found out that she was marrying someone else, which leads him to quit his test pilot gig and wander job to job.

But maybe you're right. Where is the seriousness in that character? Remember the time before Zero Hour, after Coast City was destroyed, that Hal slaughtered almost the entire Green Lantern Corp? That was a barrel of laughs!! Van Wylder is a great pick.

They're not doing fuckin' Emerald Twilight the first movie, dude. They're gonna be showing goddamn giant green boxing gloves and Hal getting knocked out by yellow ceiling tiles falling on his head.

^ its a reflection on the character, "dude". As is the fact that he is a test pilot, most of whom I would describe as possessing "gravitas" (well, the one I have known anyways). All I can say is that if you read GL and hear Van Wylder in your head, I can only say that we experience the books differently.

My first reaction was...I guess he won't play the Flash now. Which is a better fit I think. Though the idea of Ryan Reynolds in a Greg Berlanti scripted piece sounds appealing.

I was kind of hoping the Green Lantern gig would go to Bradley Cooper.

not knowing anything about green latern, so i'm admittedly at a disadvantage...i was hoping they'd go with timberlake*. he was pretty good in alpha dog, and i was hoping they'd give him a shot at a lead role.

*cause the buzz about it that i read was between reynolds, cooper and timberlake...not leto

^ Oh, hell no. Justin Timberlake is funny (and I don't care about his music), but he doesn't need to go anywhere near the Green Lantern character.

This is just fan art, but it gives some idea as to the difficulty of making a live-action GL suit work on film. It ain't gonna be easy.

honestly even as a kid i thought i would see a time when comic book heroes would stop wearing costumes

they aren't relevant anymore. someone named The Hourglass has a costume in the shape of an hourglass? HOLY SHIT

comic books are written for a more educated type these days, i wish costumes were more for function than fashion

That Wolverine movie was so bad that it's fairly easy for me to pretend it doesn't exist. I'm skeptical for the up coming Thor and Green Lantern movies. I don't know how they'd even make a Flash movie work.

I concur that he'd be great as Flash considering how funny/goofy he is. Plus, Green Lantern should be black and then get into witty lover's quarrels with Hawkgirl. Okay, okay my only exposure to this stuff has been Justice League. Leave me alone.

I have way more optimism about GL than I do about Thor...at least after seeing the production stills from both movies.
