So my parents' room has a wired internet connection, but they charge $40/day for internet access. I looked at the system and it looks like a certificate based captive portal that pushes DNS. Browsing by IP does not work, hosts file redirection to an external DNS does not work, scanning with nmap for an "out of band" unsecured network returns some very strange errors. I spent ~40min but then had to leave for dinner. If they bought it for one day, I figured I could forge the certificate, but it's signed with RSA. Anyone got any ideas?

Pay for the damn service, or go to a free hotspot somewhere else instead.

Go find a coffee shop or something. You're obviously somewhere new, go explore and people watch.

you can't really do much now, but for next time:http://www.splitbrain.org/blog/2008-11/02-dns_tunneling_made_simpleas long as their DNS server will resolve queries to any domain, this will work.]

they don't have data plans and are in a country where that would be extremely cost prohibitive, to the tune of $20/mB. No free hotspots within 1mile. they were trying to get information from my sister about when and where to pick her up (it depends on audition call backs). luckily, what's working is putting their dns IPs/host names and pointing them to ncsu's dns services in the hosts file.
