i graduated in december and now im a part time manager in retail hell. my immediate supervisor made me clock out and work today rather than get one fucking hour of overtime. ive got something wrong with my foot which has me limping around saying "shit" "fuck" with every step, and i woke up with terrible heartburn, i'm officially too tired to sleep. im legally prevented from going to live with my husband in the house we own in quebec and ive been jumping through dozens of flaming circus rings to get a visa. now ive submitted everything and they arent going to re-open my file til august 1. i need my man and to get out of this shitty job and shitty life and into good health again. ARGH! [Edited on June 28, 2009 at 3:13 AM. Reason : ]

^^^^well, "ALL OF YOUR PROBLEMS" is pretty nebulous. but as far as a) being separated from my husband and b) working a pointless soul-devouring job rather than one in the field i trained for, i believe that yes, that is the solution.and yes, this is a totally self-pitying emotacular thread. abort retry kill plz[Edited on June 28, 2009 at 3:19 AM. damn. your story is horrible. i think i read about it in like a lounge thread or whatever. i can't imagine living away from someone you're married to for that long. and working retail sucks because i do it so i feel you!my mom got diagnosed with cancer in december and she died in april but i dropped out of law school this past semester because while my mom had cancer my dad had two strokes in march so they were both in the hospital at the same time while my mom was dying.i feel you. i really do. i mean not exactly but i understand the frustration. i don't know how i would deal with your situation.also to h8r having a job that sucks is ALMOST in some cases just as bad as not having a job. i mean it isn't - i know the economy is bad and everyone wants a job but if your job is making your life miserable sometimes it is good to have something to make you want to change. but then again losing a job you loved or were comfortable in is like so awful i mean, its like as awful as someone dying. its like hard to take getting laid off as something NOT personal. it feels personal if you have been working your ass off for someone.
6/28/2009 3:19:10 AM
jesus what a depressing thread
6/28/2009 3:26:12 AM
yeah, i just feel like my job is trying to take more and more advantage of me every week, just pushing me farther and farther. i think its inevitable at this point that i am going to quit with no notice. our store manager has been on vacation this week and the assistant store manager has gotten kinda tyrannical. my equal is getting really pissed at her too. she keeps writing the schedule to benefit herself and giving us dumb turnarounds and lately shes taken to calling my cell and house lines multiple times on my days off and waking me in the morning, usually because she cant comprehend some note i've written her. then i have to vebatim say whatever it is i wrote on the note and she is like "oh, ok." but shes uncontactable on her days off, naturally. today she was asking me if she was being bitch about some stuff she said several weeks ago, and then bitches me out today because i dont want to work off the clock just in case i go over on my hours. all the good normal people of the world are on vacation these days and the incidence of rude customers is a lot higher than it was a few months ago. i guess im not really a people person because i just cant take this crap much longer.

That really sucks, but it does happen to thousands of people each year who have spouses in the US but can't come here for one reason or another.

It's illegal as hell to make you work off the clock. The next time your manager calls you when you are off, tell them you did some looking and it was illegal and they'd be facing a firing for doing it and you'd love nothing more than to take their job.If you're getting pushed around in the US, what makes you think Canada will be any different?

Website: http://www.nclabor.com/edb/edb.htmPhone: 1-800-625-2267 I'm sure they would love to hear about you being forced to work off the clock. Even better would be if you could have some of your fellow employees report similar concerns (assuming they are being forced to work off the clock too)[Edited on June 28, 2009 at 8:18 AM. i am really not trying to be a dick, but were you spoiled from an early age?The part about living apart from your husband is terrible, i definitely feel your pain and sympathize with you there, but having to deal with a mediocre job from time to time is just part of life. The majority of the population will never escape those jobs, at least you know it is only temporary.perk up
6/28/2009 8:55:26 AM
i hate my job right now due to compulsory overtime i get paid for it though, and its supposed to end soon, it just sucked because the last six months went by in a blur and i do not remember any of it because i worked the entire time]

Complain to HR or your GM about being made to work off the clock. It will probably get this person fired. It is illegal as all get out. Companies have been really screwed with law suits in the past for doing this.
6/28/2009 10:45:04 AM
or better yet, sue your employer

6/28/2009 12:25:45 PM
Also - off the clock rules are much different in Quebec (and the rest of canada) for all you Lawyer wannabes.
6/28/2009 12:26:31 PM
how's that taste of reality for ya?I feel like everyone needs to work a hard/aggravating retail/service job just to get in touch with the world.
6/28/2009 12:27:14 PM
explain this to me:
6/28/2009 12:39:12 PM
part time just means you dont work 40hrs EVERY week.
6/28/2009 12:46:33 PM
ah, i took part time to mean 20-25hrs a week
6/28/2009 12:48:26 PM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5AWbgkRpYwcMan, if this could be embedded with autostart that would be great. I'm an asshole. As for your health problems: Search for local free health clinics. http://www.ncfreeclinics.org/I'm assuming you're here in the area. Basic free care will be better for you than nothing. Ignore the issue and you might end up getting your foot cut off.Definitely inform your manager when they get back about the fact that the other manager ordered you to clock out and work for free to avoid collecting overtime. If the response to that isn't acceptable, go to the board of labor about it.Look around for less shitty retail jobs. The goodwill community foundation hires people at $11/hr with benefits (after a certain initial period), and it's sure to be a job you could get more personal satisfaction and greater financial security from. You'll have to be quick on applying whenever you see an opening though as competition will likely be fierce.[Edited on June 28, 2009 at 12:58 PM. Reason : words]

i cant believe this thread is still kicking. i took the lame job because i thought my visa problems would be resolved long before they actually will be. the fucked up thing is that i have a job in my field waiting for me across the border. i just want to make a living wage and not have rude people up in my face all the time that i have to smile and be nice to.
