My boss bought a 2GB ram chip for his pc. We put it in, BIOS notices the changes and passes the BIO mem test fine. Windows throws a blue screen up declaring a physical dump.

My pc also takes the type of same ram chip so we put it in my mine. It booted up fine and then when i went to run large programs (photoshop, anitvirus, explorer, etc) I would get window error report crashes when they started up.

My conclusion is our motherboard doesn't support 2GB densitiy chips. I suggested we return the chip and get a 1GB chip. I figured the BIOS would catch a memory mismatch or type that wasn't supported but it didn't.

The 2gB chip in question is a Kbyte 2GB PC5300 DDR2 DT. What does the DT on the end mean?

Gonna go out on a limb and say DT = desktop

Do a search for that same 2GB PC5300 DDR2 but with NB and see if you find notebook.

Try looking at the support page for the motherboard manufacturer to see if the motherboards support 2GB DIMMs. Also, have you tried memtest?

We need more info. What is the motherboard you tried the ram in? Also alot of motherboards now use dual channel memory which should be installed in pairs.

I just googled kbyte (since I have never hear of it) and it seems there are many people having the same problems you listed. Return that stick and buy something of name brand like kingston, corsair, crucial, g.skill, geil, or mushkin.

Memtest passed on both PCs. Counted up to 4029 or whatever it counts to.

Both chips are PC5300 DDR2. I should have said "chips" since we tried 2x2GB chips and 1x2GB chips and received the same symptoms.

both are different HP desktop brands. One is a hp compaq dx2400 minitower and the other is hp compaq dc7700 convertible minitower. I have looked up the manuals and haven't read anything about max chip size just chip types and max supported sizes.

My boss and I are both running 32 bit windows. I guess the usage of the full 4gigs is pointless anyway.

exactly.. i don't care what tests you're running that say it's ok.. it sounds like real world results are saying it sucks balls and isn't worth any small savings.

I have a pegatron mobo. 2a73h 1.01

Not sure what my boss had in his.

Anyway, taking the ram back, failed memtest. I think these computers can support 2GB RAM chips but not shitty Kbyte ones.
