Looking to rent a cabin in the mountains of NC for 4-5 days for 6 people sometime around the end of July/beginning of August. Ive found a few websites listing cabins for rent but I have never done this before. Looking for thoughts/tips/opinions on how to find the best cabin for cheap and areas I should avoid or definitely go. Also if you know someone who has a cabin, or can recommend a company/person please let me know. Thanks!

what area are you going? Northwest mtns around Boone? Central mtns around Mt Mitchell, Pisgah and Great Smokies? Or southwest of Asheville in Cherokee and Nantahala? Two summers ago a group from work went up to Bryson City, an hour west of Asheville, for a mtn biking trip. We got a place though - http://yellowroserealty.com/rentals.phpWe ended up getting this cabin, and it was ca-razyhttp://yellowroserealty.com/rentaldetailmain.php?number=410All wood, 3 floors, game room full kitchen, hot tub, big porch, TVs in every room w/ satellite, etc. I think it was $600 for the weekend, and we had like 9 people, so it was barely $70/person for the whole weekend - 3 days, 2 nights. Can barely do better than that at a hotel.

^ thanks for the websites and info! I dont have a specific area of the mountains in mind. Looking for the best area with the best value and stuff to do. Ive heard the mountains around Asheville are the best for things to do, but prices are also higher around there.

what you want to do? Mtn bike? Road bike? Hike? Raft? ..... gamble? The area from Maggie Valley, to Bryson City, to Sylva is good for access to the southern Smokies and the Pisgah and Nanthala forests

Hiking and fishing for the most part. Near Asheville would be nice so we can go into town a couple of nights but not a deal breaker. Forgot to mention pet friendly cabins would be a plus. Found this site: http://www.carolinamountainvacations.com/Find_Cabin.phpAlso anyone tried talking to the property owners directly and negotiating a better rate? Judging from the availability calender some cabins are hardly used and often sit empty.

Check out http://lilsliceaheaven.com/ I stayed there back in March. You deal directly with the owner, so it's a bit cheaper since there's not tax, and fees and such tacked on. It's about an hour away from Asheville. I really liked it.

my family owns a cabin and we've rented it out for a week in the past, usually we just let family and friends stay for free, I think we only let people "rent" it if they donate the rentals to my dad's non-profitit's a place ~30min outside of boone and west jefferson if that's an area that interests you, I'd be happy to give you their number if you're interested as well as provide some pics

try:http://www.homeaway.com/or http://www.vrbo.com/both are sites that are have private owners so you can get better deals than through a company. If you need a mountain place that can sleep 4 or a beach place that sleeps 6 let me know
