Suggestions from people who have actually been to Tahoe in the summer on what to do/where to go would be appreciated.Don't care much for google or a NYT article that describes a bunch of things the author never actually did/saw. Just looking for some RL experiences from some of you guys.[Edited on June 19, 2009 at 10:03 AM. Reason : .]

tahoe kinda sucks during the summer unless you like to gamblebut then again, if you want deal with 90-100 degree temps during the summer you could just as easily go to vegas and have more funi've been countless times during the winter but only once during the summer, should tell you something...

i've spent probably a total of 3 months in the tahoe area, mostly for work in the desert between Carson City and Reno. There's a ton of outdoor stuff to do in the area. There's outstanding mountain biking and hiking. You can go swimming in public access areas, but the water is COLD! Also there's boat rentals and jetskis on the lake, but i don't know how much they cost. The desert is mostly BLM land, so rent a 4wd or dirtbike/quad and have at it. Just be sure to close the gates and watch out for livestock. Its not uncommon to run across a herd(?) of wild horses. There's not a whole lot going on in Carson City, but Reno can be fun in a sleazy sort of way. The whole area is beautiful and amazingly different from the east coast, I enjoyed just driving around and stopping whenever I saw something interesting. Also, you're only about 4 hours from San Francisco, and the drive through the Sierras alone is worth it.^re: 90-100 temps. yeah it gets quite warm during the summer down in the desert, but its not uncommon to be 20degrees cooler at higher elevations. also, its super dry, so the heat isn't quite as stifling. well, like you said, the water is freezing, so i didn't have the best time when i compare it to snowboarding trips at North Star and Heavenlyif youre going to shell out tons of money to fly out from NC to Cali, I could name tons of other places to spend time in nature that are more scenic and fun

fair enough. i'm not big into skiing or snowboarding, but my friends love it there in the winter. i usually just drink coffee and check out the snow bunnies.

There's awesome rock climbing all over the Tahoe region. Plus you're close to the Owens Valley and access to the East side of the Sierra.
