Recently I dumped cable TV and decided to upgrade my internet connection. Currently I am at 7mbps through TWC Ohio. Unfortunately my real-time speeds are not reflecting anything like they are supposed to be.

I've ran multiple speed tests and the max I'm getting is 700kbps. There are not splitters inline with my cable and as far as I know my modem and router are fine. I upgraded the firmware on the Linksys two days ago as well because I was having trouble downloading to my PS3.

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions that I might be able to talk to the TWC guy about when I get him here sometime this week? Thanks.

i think you may have a capitalization issue. TWC Ohio is probably quoted at 7 Mbps and that equals 896 KBps. TWC is quoting you 7 Megabits per second, whereas speed test is showing you 700 kilobytes per second. So are you upset over missing out on the extra 196KBps?

Yeah

common error. You're getting exactly what you've paid for. The rough conversation factor is 8. So 700x8=5600, divide by 1000 and you're at 5.6. be happy you're that close to 7..

we pay for either 12 or 20 here at work and are lucky to get half that

Guys,

Aren't most online speed tests in bits?

And in fact, he says his speed tests are in kbps, not KBps.

Oh, and:

Had a roommate who did contract work for TWC. The TWC guy will not, I repeat, will NOT assist you in any way. If for ANY reason the customer calls up and complains about work a previous technician did, that same technician is required to go back out to the customer on their own time. The first technician does the basic job as the job statement calls for. Afterwards, TWC will instead send out another technician to diagnose the same way, run the same tests, etc. You will not get the "services" type of deal you are looking for.

Let's go back to the base assumptions ... what all are you looking for out of your internet connection? Why did you decide to upgrade / pay for additional speed / etc.? May be an alternate solution available which will meet your needs.

eh...ok maybe I used the wrong k/K, but I don't think so. Speed tests say With what we "have" I should be pulling in upwards of 8000kbps, 10X what I currently am.

Also, I really just want the PS3 and CS:S to be able to run smooth at the same time. When one is on, the other lags heavily right now.

I really wish TWC would increase the upload cap. Even to 512 would be some improvement.

Has anyone noticed higher download rates lately? I just ran a couple of speed tests and it looks like I have free Speed Boost or something:

Mine's gotten a lot slower. I used to get about 25 / 1, since my promotional RR Turbo rate ended I've been getting about 10 / 0.25. I think they deliberately give new users better service to get them hooked, then cut it back after the promotional period ends.

I'm in Southport. I asked if they could give me service outside their normal tiers for a negotiated rate, but they won't. They offer 2 / 2 on RR business class. I said I'd pay the same rate (a small fortune) for 10 / 2 minus all the business class services, but they said they "can't" do that. However, I know the cable modem is what governs the rates and they have complete control over that.

I had a conversation with a rep almost exactly like the comic, except I wasn't as fast on my feet as Gabe. Makes me want to call and complain again.
