Anyone interested in trying this again. Last effort did not work if I recall.
6/6/2009 12:38:20 PM
The only way I'd really be able to be a contributor is if I could google and you guys didn't mind waiting.
6/6/2009 1:11:49 PM
just do like everyone else in here and make up statistics and predicted outcomes. be sure to quote people out of context and divert the topic of conversation as much as possible.
6/6/2009 2:06:27 PM
so, no one is up for beer n chat sometime
6/6/2009 7:09:19 PM
I'd be down if people actually show up this time.
6/6/2009 7:25:05 PM
Now if we can only find a good Hookah Bar to have this summit at.
6/6/2009 7:54:05 PM
Id be down if people show up too
6/6/2009 8:02:23 PM
How many of these had a good turnout other than the first one?
6/6/2009 9:13:02 PM
They've always sounded interesting to me, but I've never made it to one... I guess working 6 days a week in Carrboro, makes my interest in attending usually... theoretical.
6/6/2009 9:22:14 PM
i think grumpygop and gamecat met a few years ago or something
6/6/2009 9:51:19 PM
i might consider it if enough people showed up and the venue is decent. i nominate the foundation bar in raleigh. seems like a philosophical discussion sort of bar.[Edited on June 6, 2009 at 10:13 PM. Reason : .]
6/6/2009 10:11:12 PM
too bad its not charlotte, they have a bar called the philosophers stone.
6/6/2009 10:57:21 PM
I'll def. do everything I can to show up this time. Last time I had a problem because I suggested it, and then got a night job and couldn't attend. But I will pull out all the stops to attend this new iteration. gg Republican, I've been thinking about doing this for some time but...well, I drink too much.
6/7/2009 2:24:46 AM
I'm interested... but not definite.Put me on the list if you're sending PMs, that's all I'm sayin.
6/7/2009 6:05:08 AM
FYI, 10 maybes = 1 solid.
6/7/2009 5:23:08 PM
I went to one a couple years back. I only knew McDanger prior to it but I met Grumpy, Gamecat, and moron there. It was a good time and probably would be again provided people who just want to come and instigate shit don't show up.
6/7/2009 10:48:17 PM
I'm not a maybe, I'm a definite if it's on the right day (and I don't have too many "wrong" days...even during the week I don't have class until almost 2:00 PM)I'll propose this Friday as a starter. Don't really care about the location. If need be I can get a ride home (probably from Gamecat, because he's cool about such things. )
6/8/2009 12:12:57 AM
how do these things usually go?
6/8/2009 12:18:55 AM
We sit around, have a couple of beers, maybe some food, and shoot the shit. There's a little political/philosophical discussion, but it's always mild and lighthearted. Mostly it's just getting to know the people behind the screen names. You learn the faces, hear something about their lives, sympathize about woman problems (I say this because only one woman has shown up that I can recall, and she later caused some of said problems). It ain't speech and debate club.I've never had a bad time at one. And I've made some decent friends at them that I still talk to outside of the wolfweb but would never have conversed with socially before.
6/8/2009 12:27:01 AM
jlphipps was going to come with me last time but then something happened, damned if i remember. that was the only girl that ever showed interest that i know of. bring yer sausage.
6/8/2009 12:39:01 AM
makes sense. the only girl who regularly posts in saopbox is aaronburro
6/8/2009 1:19:05 AM
See, that's an example of the kind of commentary that doesn't take place at the summits -- or, if it does, it is said in such a clearly joking manner that everyone has a laugh.
6/8/2009 1:20:28 AM
I haven't been posting as much lately but I can legally drink now so this would be a good excuse to drink beer.
6/8/2009 2:09:23 AM
I think I could def come if it was on a weekend in the afternoon. I will wait and look for a specific day b4 making a commitment.
6/8/2009 8:57:47 AM
I like the idea of a Friday night. I swear if I have to spend another "summit" just arguing with Gamecat as I have been doing since middle school I am going to hunt you all down! Plus I owe that dude $28.00 that he will harass me for.
6/8/2009 11:12:02 AM
i never could figure out what Gamecat's ideology was, anyway. He's probably one of the more enigmatic members on here ideology-wise.I'd come if it just happened to be when I am in Raleigh, which is typically about 2 days a month. I spend my days in Virginia these days.
6/8/2009 5:17:02 PM
He's been all over the place. From decently left to now fairly moderate from my estimation. He is a self-proclaimed libertarian. You will be hard pressed to find someone more knowledgeable about their positions though.
6/8/2009 5:24:57 PM
The best arguments are arguing over the philosophies at the root of things. This is why I miss having McD around to take classes and argue with guys like Drs. Hinton and Aurebach.Everyone should have to take a Philosophy class that ends with them having to give a defense of everything they believe.
6/8/2009 5:30:12 PM
^^ I wouldn't say "all over the place". More like a move from "moderate leftist" to "left-libertarian".
6/8/2009 5:55:11 PM
Oh I know I've been all over the place. My first posts in here were about how I was a libertarian green. Now I consider myself a liberal (way more to it that that tho), but at least my convictions are more grounded in something other than being rebellious like I used to be.
6/8/2009 6:09:27 PM
being a Libertarian Green, or even a libertarian Green, is impossible (in my view). an environmentally concious libertarian/Libertarian...yes, that's reasonable.
6/8/2009 6:14:47 PM
^ True.
6/8/2009 6:52:06 PM
You're thinking in terms of the political parties in the US, I'm guessing. They don't teach Tolstoy beyond War and Peace much, and they really should.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_anarchisthttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leo_Tolstoy#Religious_and_political_beliefsI lost my idealism.
6/8/2009 7:04:28 PM
6/8/2009 8:28:53 PM
Everyone should have to take a Philosophy class that ends with them having to give a defense of everything they believe.Yes, that is when you first discover yourself, and your true identity, as a being that is capable of advanced thought and reason. Hopefully, this realization happened well before some philosophy class at state, lol.
6/8/2009 8:47:26 PM
i think people who try to make a reasoned, consistent and all-encompassing philosophy for how they live their lives are either over-simplifying things or are huge pricks. i've seen a few of both.
6/8/2009 9:48:01 PM
I'm down for sure, Friday night is good for me. Has a location been selected yet?
6/8/2009 11:27:42 PM
You seem to present a false dichotomy. People that attempt to make sense of life itself are either know-it-all pricks, or over-simplify things in error? I believe anyone that does not try to make a reasoned, consistent, and all-encompassing philosophy for how they live their lives, is ignorant at best and stupid at worst.
6/9/2009 10:26:11 AM
i guess i'd need an example of someone successfully doing this. the only people i've ever known to have done this either didn't actually make an all-inclusive philosophy (eg they willfully ignored shortcomings/problems in their philosophy and their adherence to it) or the strict adherence to their philosophy was detrimental to their lives.anyway. don't want this thread to get on too much of a tangent. i'd be willing to discuss this more thoroughly over a drink or two on friday.[Edited on June 9, 2009 at 10:53 AM. Reason : .]
6/9/2009 10:47:24 AM
I actually agree with sarijoul. I have yet to meet anyone that can actually successfully defend every single one of their beliefs in a consistent manner. I think being forced to study your beliefs in detail so that you recognize inconsistencies is a very fine thing that most everyone should do in college. However, expecting anyone is successfully build an internally coherent philosophical approach to their lives at the age of 23 is ridiculous.Personally, I think a better thing for a person to learn from a college philosophy class is how to admit what they don't know about themselves or the world. I think a dose of humility would serve the student better than a false sense of having it "all figured out."
6/9/2009 1:36:43 PM
I'm not letting the thread die, god damn it.I still suggest Friday, just because it's the most concrete suggestion that has been made yet. I am open to other possibilities that may increase attendance.
6/10/2009 7:18:46 PM
Which Friday though?
6/10/2009 7:31:43 PM
Well, I had suggested this coming Friday, but that seems a bit close now, so I dunno.LOOK I'M TRYING HERE OK???
6/10/2009 9:01:20 PM
I can't do next Friday, I have tickets for the American Dance Festival in Durham.
6/10/2009 9:36:39 PM
I...I can't even tell if you're joking.I mean, assuming that you were actually missing it to go to a dance thing, I'd hope you'd at least have enough concern for your own dignity not to mention why you were going to be absent.

PinkandBlack is a better thinker in his 20's than you will ever be.

^^^^I'm going to see a performance choreographed and designed by Shen Wei, who put together the amazing show at the commencement of the 2008 olympics. I have no shame in being a patron of the arts.[Edited on June 11, 2009 at 12:37 AM. Reason : -]

This Friday is no good given that it's game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals.
