i havent used it in almost 3 years... i'm hearing gtalk supports aim, or at leas pidgin or something wouldbasically asking if there are any features worth downloading the 400mb aim 8 or whatever
5/27/2009 7:38:04 PM
good questionI've been happily using pidgin for a long time. gtalk does support aim also.[Edited on May 27, 2009 at 7:39 PM. Reason : -s]

i saw it had radio and add other protocols like maybe yahoo etc... it was just getting into sms when i stopped.i mean text messaging has killed my need for aim, but some people id like to talk to again without getting a new 20000 radio stations and toolbars
5/27/2009 7:41:48 PM
in my experience then pidgin is the most stable and lightweight. I might be wrong but who cares.
5/27/2009 7:46:09 PM
adium x & pidgin FTW. i've happily stayed away from aim for quite some time now. considering the bloatware and ads AIM keeps pushing, there's no way i wouldn't go with a free alternative.
5/27/2009 7:56:05 PM
wasn't it not too long ago that in order to get AIM you had to get the whole AOL program? Or.... was that the Mac version of AIM they released? anyway, who the fuck cares. On Mac, AdiumX is the wins
5/27/2009 8:15:38 PM
im using digsby, which is heavier than pidgin, but i like it better
5/27/2009 8:25:33 PM
I can still remember using deadaim or whatever to hax away the ads. Those were the days.[Edited on May 27, 2009 at 8:26 PM. Reason : of course I can still remember when errybody had ICQ so oh well.]
5/27/2009 8:26:31 PM
ICQ. ahahahhaha. I remember thatI, too, used DeadAIM. Sucks they quit supporting it. It was pretty badass originally.
5/27/2009 8:38:38 PM
I use AIM Lite -- it's about the lightest AIM there is.http://x.aim.com/laim/
5/27/2009 8:41:15 PM
aim6 is retardedly bloatedaim 5.9 w/DeadAIM is nice
5/27/2009 8:56:09 PM
I enabled AIM within the builtin gmail gchat side pain & haven't looked back
5/27/2009 9:35:22 PM
I use:http://www.miranda-im.org/
5/27/2009 10:41:57 PM
Pidgin is pretty sweet... not only does gchat support AIM, but Pidgin supports AIM and gchat!
5/27/2009 11:03:02 PM
I use aim ad hack. Takes out all the shitty stuff.
5/27/2009 11:06:23 PM
Like ^ saidI use http://www.aimadhack.net/]
5/28/2009 12:15:28 AM
i've been sticking with aim 4.8 since it came out. no ads, no extra shit, never had it crash or anything.
5/28/2009 8:32:12 AM
i use pidgin and it's currently running - AIM - gtalk/XMPP - yahoo - facebook - groupwise - twitter - skypein addition to the accounts above, the protocol list includes - bonjour - gadu-gadu - ICQ - IRC - identi.ca - laconi.ca - MSN - myspaceIM - QQ - SILC - simple - sametimei don't even know what a lot of those are...also, add to that the fact that i made a TWW smilies plugin so i can use the face with all of my protocols since i utilize multiple IM protocols, i would hate to consider anything but an all-in-one solution

i don't know how much memory new aim uses, but mine is using 3,556k. just fyi

I've been on pidgin since it was gaim, and it's great especially at this point
5/28/2009 12:15:59 PM
i tried pidgin on windows but it kept crashing.using AIM now through google chat and it works great.
5/28/2009 2:02:41 PM

5/28/2009 4:39:22 PM
I haven't been in AIM in like 3 or 4 years. So I'm not much help.Oh well.
5/28/2009 7:24:15 PM
trillian pro baby
5/28/2009 9:42:10 PM
i still use version 5.5.3598IMO anything newer than that is pure shit [Edited on May 28, 2009 at 9:56 PM. Reason : thats better]
5/28/2009 9:53:09 PM
I use digsby.
5/31/2009 9:48:17 AM
aim 5.2 is where they introduced the SMS feature (so you can see people on your buddy list who use aim on their phone). I used 4.8 forever but then I realized I couldn't talk to the phone users and went to 5.2. Uses 13mb at load with deadaim installed. That gives you tabs, logging, and blocks all ads that you can't effectively block with your hosts file alone.

I'm actually kinda surprised pidgin's memory footprint isn't any smaller. I have a few of the plug-ins enabled, and I'm not sure how that effects it. It's running at 18Mb right now.
5/31/2009 10:16:03 AM
I'm using the newest version of AIM right now. I don't know why, I only talk to like 2 people on it.I had an old one for like 5 years, but updated recently. It's not as bad as some of the other ones I don't think. I don't do anything on it except IM though.

I just downloaded pidgin based on the recommendation here, and it won't connect. ANy reason why?
6/2/2009 8:14:39 AM
Just wanted to mention I'm trying the trillian astra beta, and it's beating the shit out of pidgin. It uses about the same amount of memory (less most of the time) and feels infinitely configurable compared to pidgin. If you try it though, remember to turn off the god awful default skin - minimal everything is pretty sweet but you have to adjust 3 or 4 things.

I use Adium and I like my little calvin/hobbes dock icon.
