Has anyone else bought this game? What are your thoughts? I like it, granted I have only fought a few fights and still try to figure out how to control my fighter. Overall, besides some stupid quirks, the game is pretty good, the graphics are great, and I think it's a great start for a new franchise video game.

I know i'm gonna get flamed here but I gotta spit this out.

UFC and MMA are barbaric insults to the idea of what a sport is. Didn't gladiator shit go out in Roman times. Isn't this stuff in the same vein as dog fighting, or cock fighting. Sure you cant nutshot or use the points of your elbows but still...

its a fucked ruthless showcase of morons who go to prove that they are morons. Simple as that. Greco roman wrestling is stupid too. You telling me I cant put someones face in my armpit or counter a certain move in a certain way. Fuck that. Most of guys who actually participate in it are raging testosterone douchebags. Not to mention closeted faggots. Big time faggots too.

Reason for the rant is because I see a lot guys that are so into pit fighting, like its some new scene or something, trying to look cool. But they're really just tools. Boxing and kick boxing are sports, and martial arts in its various forms are disciplines not entertainment. UFC is shock entertainment pandering to masses and I wish they would quit showing this shit on tv. That is all.

^^ I'll not be responding to that drivel

I rented it today and have been fuckin around with the career mode. My guy sucks pretty bad but it's a lot of fun.

Judo + BBJ seems like a fun combo if I can get better at submissions

anyhooooooo I played the fuck out of the demo and bought it on Tuesday. I've already got my fighter up to a 70 overall and light heavyweight champ.

The game is tough. I have trouble with the grappling. I also have trouble pouncing on a guy when you knowck him down. I'm also tired of winning the entire match, and losing by some big high kick or lucky punch. I guess it makes the game somewhat realistic and challenging.

the gameplay is excellent. The basic elements are easy enough that you can pick up the game and enjoy it in about 2-3 fights while the depth leaves plenty of room to master particular techniques(slams, submissions, the Thai plumb) and figure out good strategy.

also, it's really fun as a fan of the sport to pull off ridiculous finishes that would never happen in real life. Like Brock Lesnar submitting Frank Mir.

with this notion from Joe Rogan gleaned from wikipedia

Quote :
"As a result of an increased number of competitors, organized training camps, information sharing, and modern kinesiology, the understanding of the combat-effectiveness of various strategies has been greatly improved. UFC commentator Joe Rogan has claimed that martial arts have evolved more in the ten years following 1993 than in the preceding 700 years."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mixed_martial_arts

It this is true (which I think might be) than that is enough to validate the sport of MMA. The entire idea is completely kick ass.

you also gotta realize that more athletes (male and female) that have no particular background in any martial art are going to start fighting, guys of all sizes

1) it will expand the competitiveness of all weight classes, and will probably result in an addition of weightclasses moreso than we have now (which i dont look forward too but nonetheless)
2) these athletes will have a clean slate, and most likely will start younger, these guys will be extremely well rounded and as the concept of using solid, long taught basic and advanced fundamentals as opposed to "use this style..use this move in this situation" catches on and is taught and encouraged by instructors, we are going to see some shockingly well rounded and highly proficient fighters that will only continue to evolve at a much faster rate

i cant say anything about how the popularity of the sport will grow, but the sport and competition itself will grow tremendously

one of my teammates last night was talking about how these little kids, 6 and 7 years old were fighting on an MMA card (i wont say where for obvious reasons), little american kids doing Thai boxing and looked nearly as proficient in terms of skills shown as the adults. one of the kids kicked the other kid so hard and so often that at the end f the final round the kid broke the top of his own foot executing a kick and just kept right on fighting. He still walked to the center of the ring got his hand raised, and ten had to be carried out of the ring. Never cried and never showed any reaction to the injury

i thought to myself "man, theres going to be some beast fighters comin up in the next few decades.

^^The concern is (rightly so) that children do not have fully developed bones, and injuries like these can (and do) cause lifelong injuries.

I love MMA and fully support it. But no one under 18 should be doing this in ANY regard. Kids do not have the mental capacity to truly understand the difference between MMA and street fighting or the real damage they can do to their peers outside of a sanctioned match.

If you want your kid to grow up and be a MMA fighter, start him/her in martial arts or wrestling. Both offer competition with clear differentiation from reality, and without the risk of doing serious long term harm to youngsters.

I didn't troll nastoute, I just have a dissenting opinion about pit fighting being called a sport.

But the Joe Rogan snip you posted is something i'll take a jab at.

Quote :
"the understanding of the combat-effectiveness of various strategies has been greatly improved. UFC commentator Joe Rogan has claimed that martial arts have evolved more in the ten years following 1993 than in the preceding 700 years.""

Bullshite. There has been no evolution of any sort. It just that the marketing has let up. Notice he said 700 years. It just goes to show that has been going on since ancient times. Where theres money and betting you'll find pitfighting. New terms of slang, like ground and pound, etc, are what have come from this media venture.

And speaking of ventures, the only difference now is that instead of showing this on pay per view (like they should've kept doing) is that its been made into an easy to swallow chewable tablet for the average american. I dont respect anybody who likes this shit, sorry I just dont. Its water downed brutality that speaks poorly of western society in of itself. But then again television is/and/has been going to hell for quite some time now. You got 'who's the best ho' programming now that's labled reality television. Thank you vh1 and mtv, I really admire my generation now.

But seriously, I really dont care if I get called out as a tightwad on this. I'm just not gonna support this stuff. Lee already captured what this shit is about with Jeet Kun Do a long time ago. Knuckleheads wanna kill themselves in the octagon that's fine, just dont expect any fanfare from me.

I just don't buy this angle that you're taking about "easy to swallow" or whatever

if you're arguement is against organized fighting... ok, that's one thing

but why are you slamming MMA as a whole? because it's not boxing or amateur wrestling or whatever?

I just don't understand.

and how can you say the evolution of fighting styles hasn't occured... the wiki article I posted pretty much lays out how it did occur

i love this game, the way the knockout system works makes it pretty easy or a button masher to win. also makes it a lot like real life where a spinning back fist can come outta nowhere and knock someone out.

my biggest gripe w the game is the way you build your character in carer mode. instead of them gaining skills from fights they gain it from training in between fights. so i find myself rushing through the fights to get back to training when they should be the main focus.

for the little 15 minutes u spent in the fight uve spent 8 weeks @6 hours a day preparing physically and mentally for the fight

i think they did it perfectly

Quote :
"It's like impossible to level up your judo by going to camps"

Quote :
"NO YOU DO NOT, MUCH LIKE I DO NOT GET TO HAVE THE MOUNT FOR MORE THAN 5 SECONDS BEFORE GETTING SWEPT"

haha

This game is soooo much more fun now that I've figured out the ground game. Standing up and mashing buttons for a knockout is kinda fun at first but the depth of the other aspects in this game really makes it special. I have most of the transitions memorized and I'm getting pretty good at blocking/reversing whatever my opponent does on the ground.

I have a new boxing/judo guy in career mode on expert difficulty. He's a grinder, mostly content to gnp the body and block transitions until an opponent is completely gassed.. then BAM, submission time. I've also had a few knockouts with dirty boxing uppercuts or hammerfists from the mount, but most of my wins have been by decision.

Very gratifying and fun imo

Yeah I'd say it's impossible to go undefeated for your career unless you play on beginner. Once you get a streak going the hype train picks up speed and you end up having to fight someone way too good. That shit happens in the real UFC so it doesn't really irk me.

Also, mistakes get punished in this game. Getting mounted or keeping your hands down at a distance can result in a one punch knockout, as in real life. Last night I was winning late in the 3rd with my Judo guy against Berkman and went for a submission. He escaped to the standing position and clinched with me. I instinctively went for a throw but he countered it by taking my back and instantly sinking in a RNC. My guy was completely gassed from transition blocking and my own prior submission attempt. I was ahead on the cards and should have just rode out the decision instead of going for one last throw(I have had wrestlers attempt that exact same counter move in previous fights).. my guy tapped with :03 left in the fight

It was infuriating but I made the mistake and learned a valuable lesson from it.

I made a LH first and when I got to the top 5, Forrest, Rashad and Shogun whoop my ass and i cant do ANYTHING. Especially against forrest.

Made a welterweight with high endurance and submissions, but I get reversed ALWAYS, even in the 3rd round after working their body the entire match. Any tips?

I'm working on a lightweight Muay Thai / BJJ fighter...5'4" Lil Weezy...he has 'GANGSTER' tattooed on his forehead...anyway I kind of suck with him...high submit offense stats, but can't submit the computer to save my life...i click the right stick to start and then start whirling the right stick clockwise but they always reverse it

I've had the most luck with my heavyweight boxer/wrestler, 6'7" mike tyson from the bronx

focus my training on standing strikes and ground strikes mostly...maxed out the striking camps before even messing with the grappling camps...try to keep strength, speed and stamina fairly close...during fights i try to stay standing and come with massive lunging head shots, mixing in some body kicks...also i'll try to get in a clinch and uppercut his head...but if i'm going against a really good ground fighter and they're on the ground, i'd rather stand and kick their legs til they get up then go into their terrain...some of those fuckers can submit you in like 10 seconds

it all comes down to balancing your schedule in order to get the most cred and stats, per day...i generally will rest on odd numbered days (ie 7 days to fight, 5 days to fight, day before fight) and do sparring or training on even days...if you spar with somebody and land more punches, kicks, elbows/knees, knock them down a time or two and get in a few clinches, you'll get a bunch of points to apply to your stats

also unless the cred is like 750 or 1000, dont fuck around with their stupid ass autograph sessions and internet interviews...getting 200 cred isnt worth it when it means you lose a week of training and have to flip your schedule around as far as resting

and although its a tedious pain in the ass, keep your trunks updated with your new sponsors to get extra cred for each fight

Just check out the scoring breakdowns afterwards. You really want to try to score in as many areas as possible. punches, elbows, kicks, shoot takedowns, clinch takedowns, sub attempts, near subs, successful submissions, rocked, KOs, overall damage(just play to the strengths of your character). Plus there's the stamina multiplier, so going in with less than 85% stamina is a complete waste. If you do most of those things, you'll get a solid amount of points every time.

It's also best to do nothing but train starting off. Having your strength, speed, and cardio as high as possible will increase your success in sparring moreso than increasing individual skills.

Here's a trick I figured out in the game. If you create a fighter outside of career mode, and have unlocked a lot of camps, which give you 80pt logos. Add those logos to your shorts and copy that fighter into career mode. Do not change the shorts or logos and you will get full points for those as a rookie. So I get 880 cred for each of my fights right off the bat.
