I want to get back into competitive swimming to push myself more. I know there is a Raleigh Master's group at pullen but its like $45 a month to join ( I've got a gym membership too I pay a month so that is going to be out of my budget) Did not know if anyone knows anything else. I wish I was still at state.

i am doing a masters swim class at my gym (lifetime fitness) for $34/mo which includes class on tues & thurs from 7-8. i feel its a pretty good value. i know non members can join the class for a little bit more, maybe call around to different gyms-- $45 is a lot, not knowing what you're getting for it

the 45 is a tad steep, but it covers pool time, coaching pay, and probably some events.I'm with the durham area masters association (DAMA), ours per month is $35 i think (maybe it's 32...?) or per visit at $3.50. this does not cover USMS registration $25 i think (which is yearly) usms registration is required for USMS sanctioned events (swim meets and open water races)

well i would only swim 2 times a week b/c i don't do morning swim and i want to vary my workouts so it is too steep for me

only twice a week?.... you aren't gonna get in shape in any sembalance of time with that schedule. i do 3-5 times a week (usually 3) and that has still slowed my progression.i'd still reccomend DAMA then. at the campus hills pool in durham. practices are 6:30-8:00 monday and wednesday 6:30-7:30 Friday Tuesday and Thursday 7:30 - 9:00 pm (might be 7:45 now though, and these are triathlete workouts (distance))there are morning workouts m-w-f if you change your mindhttp://www.dama.nseg.net/$3.50 per session x 2 x 4 = $28 / month at that ratewe have several raleigh folks that come swim with us, we are probably the most laid back group in masters. we go out to dinner as a group after friday practice usually.[Edited on May 15, 2009 at 5:28 PM. ^^^ the later of the two. I just don't think i'll have the time. I competitively swum for 8+ years year round with NCAA when I was younger. I just want to swim to get back into it but don't think I actually want to compete, just want to push myself. who knows though. I am still looking. I have to check the YMCA out a bit more.

yea maybe you should just switch your whole gym membership over to the Ythough i think some of their masters programs still cost, but you get the member rate. plus then you have access to a pool pretty much all the time. you don't NEED a coach for what you want to do -- you can just look up workouts on line (i mean if you swam that long you should be able to make some in your head)! you can do sets by yourself in the pool. but i get what you are saying, it may be more motivating to swim with others and to have a coach. but if you did go to the Y you could swim twice a week and then do classes or work out (dry land stuff) maybe 1 or 2 other times a week. i think the Y is nice because it just has everything i want right there. you could even do a session with a nutritionist or personal trainer (i mean they are like $25, but they can asses your fitness and then help you come up with a plan to meet your fitness goals).
