gateway mx6421
turion 64 1.8
currently has 1gb of ddr 333mhz (i'd probably max this out)
5400rpm ide drive.

I use Corel Painter, Photoshop, etc. regularly. Sometimes both at once/back and forth with an image and often with a bunch of browser tabs open (reference photos, etc.) Would it be able to handle that fairly well?

My desktop is much better hardware wise (amd 64 x2 2.2ghz, 2GB 800mhz ddr2, raptor for OS and programs, 500gb barracuda for storage) and I don't have any problems with it at all. But I'd like a laptop so I don't always have to be in my room to use it. I can get the laptop mentioned above for about $200 used. But there's no point if it can't do what I need.

This may be another option: http://raleigh.craigslist.org/sys/1162043207.html

Intel Core Duo T2700 (2MB Cache, 2.33ghz)
2GB Dual Channel DDR2 667 MHz
100GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive

It's much closer to my desktop as far as hardware goes. I'm not keen on the size of it (bigger than I'd prefer), but otherwise i don't think it would have trouble running everything the way I'm used to.

Thoughts?

I have that dell laptop that was posted on craigslist. If battery life isn't a concern, I'd recommend it.

AMD has no business being in your computer these days, doubly so in a laptop.

^what's wrong with the AMD? I have on in my laptop (Athlon X2) and the computer has ran far cooler and hasn't "slowed down" over the past year like my other computers have. I admit I'm no expert, and maybe this is because of other factors...but that's my two cents.

AMD is behind in the processor scene right now.

Thanks smoothcrim. Battery life isn't really an issue. It will be used at my house and running a cord to an outlet isn't a problem anywhere.

I disagree on that one. I built the desktop when the amd 64 x2 and core 2 duo first came out, I was happy with the performance then and I still am. Maybe a comparable core 2 duo would run better, but my guess is that I wouldn't notice a huge difference (other than in my wallet). Most of the stuff I do is more memory than processor intensive. AMD has proven just fine for me. And knowing that I do more than the average user, makes me think it's more than enough for most. Now, maybe you're right for the people who want the absolute best as opposed to something that meets their needs and then some.

I'm in the market for a laptop for my wife and haven't really begun the search yet. Looking for the best value out there in a middle of the road laptop and it won't be a desktop replacement. In the meantime, she has sent me this link

How does Dell stand these days as far as laptops go? I was under the impression the quality wasn't as great as it used to be?

i use several dell models at work fairly regularly with no problems. I wouldn't hesitate to buy dell if the specs met my needs.

I may sound like a homer considering I work there, but there's this option.

http://outlet.lenovo.com

Just launched it a couple weeks ago. Old outlet was impossible to shop. Good deals to be found.
