I work in Greensboro and know absolutely nothing about it. This will be my thread to ask questions to TWW's Greensborologists. 1. I need to find some places for lunch that don't suck. My office is near North Church Street/Cornwallis Drive (http://is.gd/xPVY) and as far as I can tell I'm surrounded by ghetto joints and fast food. I need some decent food for $10 or less within a couple miles.2. What is this gigantic spooky-ass semi-abandoned building? http://is.gd/xPWD Or, what was it? I think at least part of it is a mini storage now.

I just came here to say that Google Street View is so cool.
5/8/2009 2:16:18 PM
As for places to eat, head to the corner of Pisgah Church and N. Elm. Lots of good places there. Or you can head up Cornwallis to State Street area.and I believe that is the old Cone Mills building[Edited on May 8, 2009 at 2:17 PM. Reason : a]
5/8/2009 2:16:38 PM
I agree with djeternal, think that's part of the old Cone Mills property.
5/8/2009 2:21:30 PM
Considering what part of town that is, it has to be Cone Mills
5/8/2009 2:22:22 PM
In 10 words or less, who is Moses Cone / the Cone family or whatever, and why is everything in Greensboro named after him?
5/8/2009 2:22:32 PM
Basically, he's the motherfucker that financed Greensboro
5/8/2009 2:23:42 PM
That was a textiles building that eventually got purchased by cone mills and then cone mills started failing and outsourcing. Also Moses Cone has a villa up in boone that you can visit. MF'er was LOADED.

Go to First Carolina Delicatessen by UNCG. Call in your order and get some New York Deli style sandwiches. I recommend the Arlington. http://firstcarolinadeli.com/There is a good mexican place on State St. The Cone family is like the Rockefeller family, but with textiles.[Edited on May 8, 2009 at 2:36 PM. Fancy sandwiches and Mexican food, quality suggestions.

Elizabeth's Pizza is the shit.If you're going to be in the UNCG area, visit Yum Yum's. Coke in glass bottles, hot dogs, and ice cream. Very simple--kind of like the Roast Grill, but with ice cream. A Greensboro landmark.

I don't live in Greensboro. I, too, would off myself if I spent more than 8 hours a day here.
5/8/2009 3:21:53 PM
whatever you do NEVER eat at mexico the restaurant.it isn't good
5/8/2009 3:25:27 PM
I don't live there but I grew up thereHam's used to be an awesome place to go to for sandwiches and whatnot. The only two I ever went to were the original one (near downtown on Friendly) and the one in Brassfield. I've been to some of the franchised ones in other places and the menu kind of sucked--I don't know if they've extensively messed with the menu in the older ones. But, at least, it used to be good, might still be. Haven't been back to one of the Greensboro locations since probably 2000 or so.
5/8/2009 3:28:02 PM
If I knew where it was, it would be difficult for me to avoid eating at a place called Mexico the Restaurant.[Edited on May 8, 2009 at 3:30 PM. Reason : me]

Pho Hien Vuong (Thai/Vietnamese food) is my favorite place to eat lunch, it's not extremely close to you though. The lunch specials are good and cheap. http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ei=P4oESsehD5WEtwfq7fz_Bg&resnum=1&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=pho+hien+vuong&near=Greensboro,+N+Carolina&fb=1&split=1&gl=us&view=text&latlng=6662035872298663878&dtab=2&ei=QYoEStqjGZWqtgeO9MyXBw&sa=X&oi=local_result&ct=result&resnum=2[Edited on May 8, 2009 at 3:39 PM. Yea, the best part is the outdoor patio or whatever that faces the lake. This is the ham's there:and this is the ham's in burlingtonHard to believe it's the same chain.
5/8/2009 3:36:53 PM
Where on a scale of 1-to-Buffalo Lake does the Franklin St. Hams register?I think that's the only Hams I've ever been to. I didn't really eat anything, just cheese fries and liquor.
5/8/2009 3:39:15 PM
Never ate at the one in Chapel Hill, only Burlington once (crap), one other in g'boro (don't remember where but it was meh), and lakeside (the best by far). Also check out:http://www.elizabethpizza.com/looks like the closest one is ~1 mile away from you on summit[Edited on May 8, 2009 at 3:45 PM. the good thing about the dash playing at ernie shore field is you can again sneak beer in!the last game i went to there was a really drunk homeless man sitting behind the ump screaming BEER DRINKER the whole time. Is ironic the right word?fuck greensboro.
5/8/2009 3:50:48 PM
i, too, would kill myself if i lived in Greensboroand everywhere i've eaten downtown has been kind of shitty. Napper Tandy's has some decent burgers though
5/8/2009 3:53:58 PM
5/8/2009 3:54:24 PM
I'd rate the Franklin Street one as decent, but not as good as either of the Greensboro ones (or not as good as I remember them being). I know not this one "on the lake" you speak of.

Yeah, I just have to agree that the Ham's in Burlington is possibly the worst place I have ever eaten. It is actually the only restaurant that I have ever walked out of before my food arrived. I actually called their corporate office and complained about it. I don't know how that place is still open.
5/9/2009 2:47:55 PM
u can eat at my moms place if u want
5/9/2009 2:49:50 PM

Erniewhere you're located you need to get ready to go to lunch atBrown Gardenerhow the hell have these Greensboro people in this thread not directed you there, as of yet.whatever, get your shit together and go there.also, in regards to the Ham's that place used to be called the WhiteHall or something and was a much nicer restaurant, but its an excellent location for Hams.this will provide you with the locationhttp://www.greensbororestaurant.net/brown-gardner-fountain[Edited on May 11, 2009 at 11:33 AM. A cursory Google search doesn't have much about Brown Gardner/Gardiner/Gardener. Tell me more.
5/11/2009 11:34:59 AM
did you ever go to hayes barton dessertery in raleigh or burger hut? It is like a cross between those two. Its in a pharmacy and in the pharmacy they have a counter top grill. They make amazing burgers and the fries are perfect. salted nicely, accordion style, and crisp. Its a good place to sit and relax, but it can get quite busy.Hell, if you're not satisfied with the experience i'll pay for your meal.
5/11/2009 11:39:59 AM
Ghassan's is a great philly cheese steak place! There's one off Battleground and one on High Point Rd. by the colliseum.Ham's is another good suggestion. Libby Hill is a good seafood place, and they have lunch specials. Elizabeth's is good, the pizza is not the best, but I hear the subs are. La Fiesta is good. But THE best hot dog in the area can be found at Yum Yum's! That place has been there forever, and for good reason! Oh man, I want Yum Yum's now!And Beef Burger!! That has been there forever, used to be Biff Burger. Their burgers are small, but so good! And their menu is practically endless. And (as said earlier) Moses Cone was the guy who pretty much funded Greensboro. He funded the hospital too. (Obviously! )[Edited on May 11, 2009 at 11:41 AM. Went to Brown Gardner. Place was packed but I still got my order in under five minutes. Chicken salad sandwich and fries for $4.98. Fries weren't great, sandwich was excellent. Three out of four stars, will dine again. Good work, Mr. SeriousCat.
