K & N air filters....are they really worth their price for an average daily driven Theyota? Do they really last forever, increase bhp? What about mileage? Please enlighten me......Thanks.

they allow higher flows, but they also let through more particulate, so they're good for high performance applications, but i wouldn't put one on my daily driver.

do some googling. there's plenty of info out there on this.

yup. basically what he said ^ More porosity is not good for long term. Stick with stock air box and you'll be fine.

anyone looking for more power out of an air filter is an idiot, if you are looking for better filtration and a longer service life, then its worth the money

might as well just take the filter out and save your money, about the same filtering/power/mileage results.

^^its a manual matrix......I know it is not a car for those who care about power, but as I was reading around, a couple of articles indicated that you can get a little bit more by using K & Ns. But there were too many contradictions in all these articles.

of course you can get "a little bit more" because they don't filter worth a damn. yes, they let more air through. i doubt you'll ever truly notice a difference though. most of the time when people claim something "feels more powerful" after doing something like that to a car it's due to the fact that they drive it harder afterwards and therefore they feel that it's more powerful. it'll definitely let more particulate through though, so if it's worth it for "a little bit more", then go for it.

it's not worth it. it doesn't make any difference how much power a Matrix has. if if makes any difference to you whatsoever, you have the wrong car.

or save your money instead of wasting it trying to modify a Matrix.

There's nothing wrong with the car--it just is entirely the wrong vehicle to do ANY performance mods to.

Sorry I am not intending to mod the car. I was just looking for a basic air filter (11$ filter). Thats when I also saw a 50$ stock replacement K & N which claimed all sorts of things. I was not looking for an air intake kit or any thing of that sort.

Anyways I just bought a basic filter.

depends ENTIRELY on the application, in general it will help airflow, but it completely depends on the car.

for instance, while the K&N has higher air flow in the Audi A4, the fact that the rubber gasket covers part of the intake, it actually ends up hindering some of the air from getting through efficiently. there's also some issues from the oil messing up the MAF in the A4, so... while it worked fine in my old SE-R w/ the SR20DE N/A engine, it's entirely different on the 2.0T in the A4 now...

the cfm at a certain differential pressure means nothing if your engine doesnt exceed the stock filter that its designed for

exactly, it depends on the application, but most of the time it helps.

i'd go K&N or ITG as they are oiled filters, yes you have to recharge them every 50,000 miles, but it's imperative that if you have a high-flow filter to still be able to grab as much particulate matter as possible, something i've always been concerned about with the dry filters like AEM

have you ever pulled off the intake plumbing post filter with a K&N? I can swab a dirty finger with any K&N I've had my hands on.

well you'd have to explain why, because independent tests (all except AEM DRYFLOW) show that K&N has more dust retention than any other dry filter, from what i've seen

chrome or black, they're both covered by the fairings. I just like that there's a nut built into the casing that also has a safety wire hole in it

I'm also curious about the air filters. I'm not looking for "performance increases" (2004 Mazda 3 Hatch) but the advertisement that they last for life, along with the supposed performance increases makes it an attractive option.

You say to save money, but I can buy a $50-60 dollar filter and never change it again, or buy a $6-11 dollar filter every time I change my oil (Synthetic, 10-12K). Wouldn't I be saving money in the long term by just putting in the K&N?

Help me oh garage gurus.

what the fuck does forced induction have to do with whether you want more airflow at the cost of less filtration. that tradeoff has been the crux of every single K&N thread for the last 8 years. take your pick and stop making new threads with slightly different cars as the topic.
