So the other day my ipod died while I was listening to it. It displays a red "X" with a url at the bottom (http://www.apple.com/support/ipod or something like that). After going to the site, trying to restart it & not being able to get it into disk mode, I went to the Apple store & the genius told me the hard drive is bad. He gave me these options since my warranty is up:1. Recycle it & get 10% off a NEW ipod (not iphone sadly)2. Recycle it & get an exact replacement for $129Is there anything else I can do with this one? Or is it completely dead? I like the ipod touch, would like to get one (can't afford the plan with the iphone at the moment...). I'm also looking at refurb ipod touches, what's the big difference between the 1st generation & current? Sorry for all the questions, but thanks in advance.

there are multiple how-tos for a DIY HDD replacement such as:http://www.command-tab.com/2007/03/11/upgrading-ipod-hard-drives/also, lots of 3rd party vendors that will repair IPODs, which will be a bit more expensive than a DIY, but probably cheaper than buying a new ipod/ipod touch.or you can compare the cost of one of the above two options with buying a used ipod off of someone...

I have the 60GB iPod Video, the generation before yours. How come yours is dead already? That sucks. Have ever dropped it? I got mine in April 2005 and it still works perfectly, and I use it a lot.Anyway, good luck.

I have no idea why its dead already, I mean I recently started to take it to the gym, but when I use it I make sure I don't run/jog with it to minimize the movement/shaking it around. I have no idea, don't think I ever dropped it, half the time I used it, it was just in my pocket, the other half it was sitting in the cup holder in my car while driving...sucks
