We appreciate you stepping up to the plate to lead our Women's BBall program at an emotional time. From your time at and connections to Tennessee, you should understand what it means to follow a legend. The NC State community hopes you can walk the fine line of paying tribute to Kay Yow while reinvigorating a program with new energy and winning basketball Coach Yow brought in her prime. You have had great success as a player and coach, and we are confident you are up to the challenge.Coach Glance and the rest of the staff will always be an important part of the NC State family. While many people are understandably loyal to Coach Glance, I hope all will unite behind the new coach. There is no better tribute for Coach Yow than for the program she built to thrive for decades to come.3 time National Champ as a player at UT.3 time conference champ at WCU.Future champion at NC State.

So this is official? I can't get onto Scout or Rivals at work. If so I hope everyone supports her. She's a very good young coach and will hopefully continue having success at NC State.

Yeah when I wrote that last week I didn't know that her name was Kellie instead of Kelly.
4/15/2009 9:39:11 AM
i was seriously about to shit my pants if this was something along the lines of "Cullen Harper hired as QB practice squad coach" or something
4/15/2009 10:22:20 AM
she will be a good hire
4/15/2009 10:23:43 AM
I think it would be poor timing to introduce her as the successor to Yow at the Spring Game. Mostly because of the whole Glance situation...the fans are pretty divided on this whole thing.
4/15/2009 10:24:27 AM
^^^Ron Harper was on the Detroit coaching staff with Sidney Lowe.I think it could be awkward introducing her at the Kay Yow Spring Game. Of course, the vocal faction still upset about Glance probably won't be at the Spring game, and it could be a good time to introduce the successor to a bigger crowd. Maybe the appropriate balance would be introducing her as coach at a presser Thursday or Friday, and then walking her out/acknowledging her in front of the football crowd.[Edited on April 15, 2009 at 10:30 AM. Soon to come to NC State>>>>
4/15/2009 11:03:44 AM
i'd hit it.

I know some will disagree but this is the right move. She was a great player and winner under the best women's coach ever. She won at Western Carolina which is a difficult task in itself. I think she will do great here.

4/15/2009 12:21:26 PM
^Agreed. This is a great hire for a lot of reasons. Good job Fowler.I like the idea of introducing her Thursday/Friday, then "welcoming" her at the Spring Game.

On her website that she used to help promote WCU basketball, there is a picture with the caption"Kellie celebrates Southern Conference Championship!" It shows her holding up the #1 sign with both hands. Maybe someone can photoshop it to look like she's giving the Wolfpack sign. For some reason this comp here at work won't allow me to save the image or copy and paste it.http://www.kellieharper.com/[Edited on April 15, 2009 at 2:29 PM. Reason : ng]

I tried but my gimp skills are pretty bad. Plus I couldn't stop laughing because the fingers I copied/pasted from her look like penises.
4/15/2009 4:01:36 PM
I wonder who on the staff will be retained and who will be replaced, as well as who from her WCU staff will follow her. I think it'd be good to have some of the current assistants, especially those that played here, stay on. I guess it is all up to Harper though. I hope she interviews them to see if any of them bring anything good to the table. Persuading Larry Harris to stay kept most of the players from transferring, when Sid was hired, and I'd hate to have seen what our team would have looked like with even less scholarship players in Sid's first year.
4/15/2009 4:15:38 PM
I imagine Harper will bring all of her assistants with her. Lowe didn't have anyone to ring whith him when he was hired.
4/15/2009 4:34:38 PM
Apparently she won 2 conference titles, not 3 at WCU. Her team made a third title game. [and had an additional regular season title]Good hire.^ I expect she'll bring her staff, unless one is hired as the new HC at WCU and stays behind. Her husband will obviously come. WCU probably doesn't have as robust an athletics administration, so she may need a couple of Basketball Operations people from NCSU or elsewhere.[Edited on April 15, 2009 at 5:14 PM. Besides the 2 conference championships, she also won a regular season conference championship during another year at WCU.

A basketball program for women at MY University?Simply absurd...I'll hear none of it!!
4/15/2009 6:05:55 PM
Okay now that I'm home I can post the picture that I believe could be photoshopped with her giving the Wolfpack sign.
4/15/2009 6:18:14 PM
god damn that picture up there makes her look old as shit...looked at her bio and she's 31

Hopefully we'll be seeing her cutting down the nets and posing with championships in the future.
4/15/2009 6:47:01 PM
Here's an interview with her when she was at WCU.http://www.doubleazone.com/audio/westerncarolina.mp3You can hear some things that remind you of Pat Summitt when she talks, heck she even kind of sounds like Pat Summitt. I especially liked the part about her saying that you have to go into this profession knowing that it's a 24/7 type of job and that she has to play to her team's strengths. She wanted to run what she had done at UT, but couldn't due to obvious differences in talent, so she adjusted and played to their strengths. Coaches have to be adaptable. Here's some interesting quotes:

Good luck to the women's basketball team in the future. I hope Harper does well, but I still think this is a horrible decision. State really missed out on an opportunity to hire a very, very good coach.
4/15/2009 7:33:15 PM
^ who?
4/15/2009 8:04:32 PM
i'm not going to pretend like i've ever followed our women's team but it seems like fowler & company did a great job with the hire.
4/15/2009 8:13:42 PM
She is going the distance... check out the arms
4/15/2009 8:23:55 PM
