Waste of time?Other than a louder sound and possibly better airflow, is it worth it?I mean the air gets warmed up by the turbo anyhow right? Then cooled down by the intercooler? So what's the point in trying to keep the air cool going in the intake on a turbo?Seems like just getting a K&N or ITG and keep the stock air box is the way to go.

not really

wut?the air is heated from compression, the lower the incoming temp, the more mass you can flow through due to the higher density, and the lower the temperature rise across the compressor for the same outlet pressure[Edited on April 15, 2009 at 1:43 AM. Reason : sigh]

wont do shit on your audi. stock airbox is the best route. get a higher flowing filter if you want, but an intake will only make noise. mine droned on the highway. there was no noticable performance difference. i know there are some differences b/w my car and yours but the setup looks to be very similar. plus, afaik nobody really offers an intake that gets the filter out of the engine bay and on your car the turbo is right there next to it.

haha, i have actually heard it can hinder performance over the stock airboxhttp://www.mjbmotorsport.com/id107.html[Edited on April 15, 2009 at 9:40 AM. Reason : ,]

well class what have we learned?spend the money on more meaningful mods first.

it's pretty hard to beat the stock airbox design on most cars, at least if you still have a stock turbo and you don't have to use a different MAF housing or other such stuff.
4/15/2009 9:40:30 PM
yeah i never understood how people could think (cheap) metal intake tubes would result in lower intake temps....
4/15/2009 10:09:54 PM
perfect example: The Rx-8 intake system is incredibly well designed (part of the reason why mods gain almost 0 hp), and all the aftermarket intakes essentially maintain the stock architecture. Before the airbox it has a long intake tube (red in diagram below) and a short intake tube (purple in diagram), and an actuator (blue) switches between the two based on engine conditions. It's pretty impressive IMO, I don't know if I've ever seen something like that before the airbox, not on a production car at least.

No performance gains by putting CAI on my wrx (not sure about new generation subies). Stock airbox is efficient.

precat before the turbo? that's kinda weird... those had factory EGT?
4/16/2009 11:14:00 AM
thats not weird, its flat out stupid
4/16/2009 11:43:50 PM
^^ It makes sense if you are trying to minimize cold start emissions on a motor like that. It probably takes a long time to warm up the main cat. Think about it: you have a both a turbo and a lot of exhaust piping dissipating heat before the main cat. Putting a precat before the turbo will make it heat up faster.

and crush your flow velocity

Thats why the STI and the newer WRXs no longer have the cat in the uppipe
