FX: the only network dumb enough to allow a hit show lose momentum.

Still no official air date as far as I know. Anyone hear anything?

They are owned by Fox, after all.

the show lost momentum after season 3....it's been diminishing returns all of season 4. its like there's a funny half-life going on or something

It's still a quality show but you can't blame them for falling short of the high level they set in the first few seasons.

The "Gas Crisis" episode was one of the best they've ever made. Season 4 was very hit-and-miss compared to the past ones, but it wasn't universally worse.

Though there WAS far too much Artemis involvement in Season 4. She's just not funny. The only time she should show up again is if they need an arbitrary side character to die.

the revolutionary war ep was TERRIBLE to watch. i was cringing 3/4 of the time

its still one of my favorite shows, but its not the same just like it wasnt the same after the introduced devito, who, i like, but clearly it turned into a different show after his addition

They did good with that episode for what they had... given the premise of placing the same regular characters in a parallel revolutionary war story, they're probably the only sitcom that could have made it even 1/4 good.

Of course, they could have just taken some other concept and made it 4/4.

blaming the quality of the show going downhill on devito being introduced is so lame. he was hilarious in season 2/3... not to mention the amount of new storylines they could make due to devito's character.

There will also be a "Sunny" take on the Octomom as Dee tries to get pregnant with as many babies as possible; and a look back at the gang when they were "Sunny Babies" . Also we're going to find out that the waitress is getting married, and there will be a plot with a frat house kind of thing including some frat kids and a beer pong tournament. Other topics cover having some fun with the mortgage crisis and Ponzi schemes."

I talked to Rob's little brother last weekend. He works as a photographer for the show. They were doing some pre-production stuff, so they should be filming soon.

I don't get to talk to Rob and Caitlyn much anymore since they got married and moved to Sherman Oaks, but I'll hit them up about season 5 next time I see them.

Rob used to live across the street from me and I was complicit in Caitlyn breaking her coccyx last year on July 4th

I will relay the message if I see them soon.

I first saw an episode with Devito, and it didn't make a damn bit of sense. Then I watched the first season, and got a better feel for the tone they were going for. Anyway, they usually make one or two episodes worth watching each season.

I really hate the change from season 3 -> 4. It's hard to put my finger on one thing. Charlie's character becomes more cynical and intelligent and the other three's personality failings are used in all the jokes.

I liked it better when Charlie was insane and the rest had to "deal" with him. It seems that after the wildcard episode, that the characters turned into charactures.

I think they finally got to where they wanted to take the show. It's a story about selfish assholes. I remember seeing an ad with what's-her-name talking about Sweet D where she said she's just an asshole like the rest of them, she's just the chick. I don't think that was the case in season 1 with her or Charlie, but with all of the shit they've been through it makes sense that they are all cynical. I love how any episode is either the gang vs. eachother or the gang vs. someone else.

^^ cool I only have to sign up for Hulu. I can only assume it's the power-bottom scene, which is hilarious, but not really dependent on Devito's involvement.

All in all, this show is still hilarious. I'm getting blue balls from waiting for season 5. Sure there have been a few bad episodes here and there, but thats to be expected with any series. Honestly, i look forward to see how far they can take it. I anticipate an obama episode this season as well.

^^^ yeah, it is the power bottom scene. and you're right - Devito isn't even the main character in that scene, but his reactions how he fits in between Mac and Dennis is priceless.

I've also heard an interview with one of the creators, I think Charlie, who said that when Devito came in at S2, when the show was still new and unknown, and he was a famous multi-millionaire actor/director, that he didn't try to take over or command anything at all. The same writers still do all the writing, Devito doesn't try to influence the writing or directing, and he is totally fine with being one of the smaller characters on the show.

well that is good since he isnt funny

i mean, i guess i like the character and he is a good look for the character, but he isnt a great actor when sober and it seems like he is rarely sober these days. he is like tracy morgan on 30 rock, just playing a sensationalized version of himself, except tracy morgan is funny.

but anyway, this is still my favorite sitcom on right now and top 5 all time already, so i'm not really complaining.

but i really came in here to post this clip of danny devito "pretending" to be drunk

I'm pretty sure you can be a drunk asshole and still be funny. Plus, it's not him who needs to be funny, it's his character. He's perfect as Frank and he's been good in many other things before this role.

i've been a firm believer devito is drunk in at least 60-70% of his scenes anyways...not that i care....but the morning show clip confirms my suspicions.

As soon as the Madoff shit hit the fan, I thought to myself what a great Sunny episode that would make...but an episode that wouldn't be as good without Frank being there. The show would have a much harder time making any episodes about the economy without him, and I think DeVito brings a lot more to the table than some of you are giving him credit for.

....Perhaps you're in some alternate reality....I will say that tracy morgan is the reason I nearly gave up on 30 Rock when I first started watching it.

He's gotten a little better, but it's mostly because they tie him so closely to Kenneth, Grizz, and Dot Com.

Danny DeVito isn't great, but he serves a purpose in the show- among which is that without him and his seemingly endless supply of cash, they'd have a hard time explaining how much of anything gets done in the show (short of Sweet Dee's credit cards getting stolen by the others for the 400th time).

He + the mannequin version of Charlie (from season 4) = gold
