it's a new construction foreclosure in New Bern. I think it's somewhere in the 1900 sq ft ballpark. They're going to extend the driveway around the side of the house as a big parking pad as part of the deal.

It's a 3BR, 2.5 bath. All 3 bedrooms upstairs (good for when I have my little girl in town). Very large bonus room (FROG). Living room downstairs with gas logs (I'd prefer a functional wood-burning fireplace, but prob not gonna find it in a house of this type). Central vac.

More pics to come.

Yeah, I actually only looked at houses for 1 day and settled on this one. There were cooler houses available, but they all had a downside of some sort. This is good on location, good on floorplan (all bedrooms co-located...prob a negative to some people, but as I want a roommate, I'd feel better with this setup when my daughter is at my house). It also has a good sized garage with plenty of room to pave a parking pad for man-toys.

^ she's just butthurt because I once said that leasing a car is generally stupid, and and if you are in your late 20s and don't have a few thousand to put down on a car, you need to be driving something cheap that you can pay cash for (or close to it) until you get your finances under control. She thinks that I was being high and mighty because I said that not having any significant cash savings by the time you'r pushing 30 years old puts you behind the power curve. The intent was to help with her frame of reference, since she seemed to think that her way of doing things was perfectly normal and OK (it might be borderline normal, but that's because we're a grossly financially irresponsible society).

Anyway, enough of that. Start a new thread if you want to go down that road.

Neato.

You going to get one of the construction dudes to fix that obnoxious issue with the vinyl siding on the side of the house?

I think I like the kitchen the most. Mostly because I have an apartment with a ratty kitchen that's about to fall to pieces.

nice house man. i also love the front and back porches and they seem to have gone very tasteful on some of the internal stuff.

got a place myself recently. not as much curb apeal as yours, but i love the location and it has a floor plan that appeals to me.

[Edited on April 14, 2009 at 8:23 PM. Reason : you and i both need more landscaping though.]

yeah, definitely need more landscaping. i'll get on that later...gotta close on it and get settled in and buy some appliances first...then get a car and get rid of my big truck (and get my old truck fixed up so I can tow my jet ski)...and above all of that, I'm spending as much time with my daughter as I'm legally entitled to (and more than that in the unlikely event that her mother decides to be cooperative)

oh, and 2 weeks in Vegas coming up for a big training exercise, etc. In other words, the landscaping might have to wait a while...maybe even a year. I do want really nice grass, and some more plants and stuff. There is a row of evergreens growing in the backyard...I wouldn't mind some fruit trees or something, though.

^^^ yep, I was pulling for the $15k credit, but I'll take the $8k straight to the bank. I don't know that it's good policy, but since I'll be paying for it in taxes, I'll definitely take all I can get.

^^ mansion my ass...it's only like 1900 sq ft, tops. Still bigger than I need and slightly more than I wanted to spend, but I felt like it was a whole lot of house for the money and very well suited for my needs. It's definitely a little bit "Mc", but it could be a whole lot worse--and avoiding the "Mc"-factor costs money that I don't have, at least without sacrificing on size, features, location, etc. Overall, I like it.

^ I can't remember. Still gonna get the 1-year home warranty, even though it's a foreclosure.

haha, i expect you'll need to ante up pretty significantly for that, pat.

So...any great landscaping ideas?

What am I gonna do with that big bonus room besides put my guitars and amps in there? I'm pretty sure it's big enough for a full-sized pool table, but I don't know that I want to spend the money on even a used one. My cheap-bastardness is continually at odds with my love for man-toys.

Congrats!

I really dig the orientation of the hardwood planks. every builder seems to go either parallel or perpendicular to the walls (depending on which side you're looking at), but it's really sweet the way it's angled.

One thing i'd do is build a brick or paver patio that extends out from your porch.. put a fire pit out there, shit would be badass.

haha I just really really wish I had a covered back porch.

^^^^^ yeah, maybe someday i'll screen it in.

^^^ yeah, there's that, and the trim around the fireplace needs to be painted.

^^ still shopping around for the loan. looks like I'll be doing a VA loan and getting somewhere around 4.5--4.75%. I was gonna put down 10% just to reduce my monthly payment and save a little money on the VA funding fee, but with interest rates this low, I think I'll just keep it in cash.

^ yeah, i like the floors, too. that's one of the first things i noticed in the house. that's a pretty cool idea about the patio and fire pit. I don't know what I'd do with it, but it sounds cool, haha. I'm out in the county, so I can burn whatever I want to. Also, my mom's boyfriend does masonry and stonework, and he does good work.

thanks!

as i mentioned earlier, part of the deal is that they're gonna extend my driveway into a parking pad. y'all think it would look OK to extend it all the way to flush with the rear of the house (at basically the width of a car...or more specifically, a truck hitched to a boat)?

nice man, congrats.

i would extend the pad all the way back personally, especially if they're paying for it. leave just a few inches for a fence/gate to be set at the end coming off the corner of the house. worst case, if it causes any problems or you hate the look, you can always shorten it later.

is there an hoa? might want to check the covenants if so. boats/pwc's sitting out anywhere, even on a nice new driveway, is a big negative for many.

That AC unit seems kind of small for all that space. Plus, being 2 stories, i bet you'd be more comfortable with 2 zones.

No HOA. I'll have to double check that there are no restrictive covenants about boats, but my realtor said that he's pretty sure that it wouldn't be a factor at any house that I looked at that day. Worst case, I can keep it on base for pretty cheap, or maybe build a fence so that you can't see the boat. The whole development is just one street, though. I doubt they have that kind of stuff.
