I think so. I change mine every 10K in the diesel engine and wife's every 15K in the gas engine. Here's the proof that the oil really can go that long without needing to be changed. Anything sooner is just a waste of money.

Lab reports on spent motor oil worth the cost? I'm gonna have to go with no.

Mobil1 has sucked since they changed their formula a few years ago (according to my research on the internets). I used to use it since it was readily available at places like Autozone, but then I noticed my engine was consuming over a quart every oil change. Switched to Amsoil 5W-30 and now I consume ZERO.Lots of complaints on the forums I frequent. Mostly about how easily Mobil1 synthetic "shears". Search http://www.nasioc.com (Subaru forum) for Mobil1 horror stories.

Have you considered using your engine as a test bench for a lesser quality oil?Good is good but how bad is bad?
4/13/2009 8:32:28 PM
I'd be more than happy to use the engine that's in my Jeep that has 392K miles on it.
4/13/2009 8:57:54 PM
ive been using supertech in a car and may give it a try is 31$ the cheapest package blackstone offers?
4/13/2009 10:19:47 PM
I've never had a moment's trouble with Mobil 1. Dad's truck has about 420k on it...Mobil 1 all the way.
4/13/2009 10:19:52 PM
yep, used Mobil1 on my beat ass Saturn, and I only change the oil every 12-15k. I've put 100k on the car, and the engine has been pretty brilliant. Just changed the oil this weekend and put in the new Extended Performance stuff, since it was the same price as regular Mobil1 but with their 15k guarantee on the label.

There was a big debate about it over at the BITOG forums a few years ago on the possibility of a Mobil1 formula change. Of course, no "official" statement by ExxonMobil... but everyone's (exaggeration) UOA started changing and people started complaining. And my personal experiences backed up the rumors, so I stayed far away from it. Not trying to discredit your great experiences, just personal opinion.[Edited on April 13, 2009 at 10:40 PM. What's the difference between Mobil 1 and Mobil 1 for high mileage? I've used regular Mobil 1 before and noticed some oil burn, but when I switched to Mobil 1 high mileage, no more oil loss.

weak sauce, i ran it for over 25k regularly in Big Red I and it looked fine, not even discolered

FWIW, pepboys currently has the $10 off $30 purchase coupon. stock up on your M1 boys.

I use Mobil 1 in the GSR and the S2000. That's my oil.
4/14/2009 7:28:49 PM
all my family has run since i can remember. it really set in when i went to canada 4 years ago for a formula 1 race and got in the pits and mobil1 was the oil of choice. the cutting edge technology in formula1 made it obvious to me mobil1 is what to run. i go 10k between changes in my silverado. wife goes 10k also.
4/14/2009 8:44:59 PM
yeah, supertech is supposed to be pretty damned good stuff for an "off brand". i believe it's actually made by penzoil iirc? i use their tcw3 as a ulsd additive.as for synthetics being worth it, i personally don't think they are. i feel like dino oil technology has increased to point where you can run it at extended intervals with no issues. not quite as long as synthetic, but the price difference should make up for that. especially if you do your own changes. that said, i do run royal purple synthetics everywhere in my c5. i can't say i really believe it makes much difference, but i'd rather know that $texas in the drivetrain has every possible advantage since it's all pushed to its limits frequently.
4/14/2009 8:56:45 PM
^ok, so then you do think synthetics are worth it since you trust it to protect your $texas drivetrain.
4/14/2009 9:11:07 PM
touche, that could be an exception to my opinion depending on how you look at it. i guess it depends on what definition of "worth it" we're talking about. saving money, going longer intervals, protection under extreme use, or what? i just assumed we were talking about potential monetary differences and being able to go longer between changes.
4/14/2009 9:51:06 PM
not to mention the added mpg.
4/15/2009 9:31:00 PM
and the added coolness factor by putting a royal purple sticker on your car
4/16/2009 11:32:52 PM
if you really like your $texas ls1 than you will switch away from RP.im not gonna say i have had any super duper lab reports or anything, but in a fleet of 20 ford foci, switch 10 to RP and 10 on M1. 3 RP cars blew up within 6 mths. now they all run 10k intervals on M1
4/19/2009 6:08:04 PM
I've never had any problem running decent non synthetic at the factory recommended oil change intervals.
4/19/2009 8:58:02 PM
if you dont drive much thats fine, i'd be changing my oil every 2 months and i drive my vehicles well past 200k miles
4/23/2009 7:49:28 PM
you drive 15k miles amonth?[Edited on April 23, 2009 at 9:53 PM. Reason : lol]
4/23/2009 9:52:27 PM
ive been stocking up on castrol syntec lately (i do have a vw tho). it's been on sale for 5 quarts/$25 with a k&n filter...and theyll usually let you return the $14-$15 filter for store credits so its ~$2/quart.]
4/23/2009 9:56:13 PM
^ good stuff I assume? I used to use it in the Porsche. So what's the "consensus" here? The v8 is going to need it's oil changed soon and I need to know what to put in it. Most of the LTx/LSx guys are Mobil1 freaks. Any other thoughts? The motor's only got like 14k miles on it and only redlines every other stoplight.
4/23/2009 10:29:58 PM
just leave the oil in there unitl it turns to sludge, put a little keresene in it, repeat, $profit$
