There is so much crap online when you search for an answer to this that i figured i would try here for a simple answer. I have a JPEG image of my logo and would like to be able to place it in on my website and have the current background come through around the text. What is the best way to go about doing this? I have a program called Gimp that seems to work pretty well for editing photos etc. for what its worth.I can send you the logo if that will help. PM me your email if you can give me a hand with this. Thanks

png that shit. You need to delete the background of the logo, save as png w/ transparency. I can get it done fairly quickly if you wanna hit me up on aim or something.

yep.png is the way to go for logos. you basically need to create an alpha channel mask.either get acquainted with the magic/background eraser tool, or learn how to use extract... or there are 934890346803 other ways of doing it.http://www.sitepoint.com/article/masking-techniques-photoshop/[Edited on April 10, 2009 at 11:45 AM. Reason : oh, you have GIMP... i have no idea what the equivalent tools would be for that... get photoshop. ]

Are you supporting IE6? if so then you need to save it as either a PNG8 with transparency or a GIF with transparency. If you save it as a PNG24 then the transparency shows up as a light blue color.there is a javascript library that will force support of PNG24 in IE6 but its bloated and will drastically effect the performance of your site.if you save it as a PNG8, be sure your matte color is the background color of your site so that the semi transparent pixels don't look jagged and lame.

or better yet, use js to do browser detection and redirect IE6 users to the firefox download page

just wrap the PNG fix in a <!--[if lt IE 7]>OH NOES IT'LL SLOW DOWN THE IE6ERSwho cares, i hate them so much ^http://code.google.com/p/ie6-upgrade-warning/[Edited on April 10, 2009 at 1:25 PM. Reason : i instituted a browser check many moons ago, fuck some IE6]

It's really terrible form to redirect someone using IE6.[Edited on April 11, 2009 at 1:36 PM. Reason : Progressive enhancement, mother fuckers.]

Heh, you think IE6 is bad. We had some crazy girl complain that our site wasn't working with her browser that was IE5. I'm sorry but I'm not going to be backwards compatible 3 browser versions back. Especially backwards compatible to IE. IE6, fine, I hate it but fine. IE5, oh hell no.Upgrade your software.[Edited on April 11, 2009 at 4:46 PM. Reason : IE5?! WTH.]

Up until a couple years ago my K6-2 450 MHz mini desktop PC was more than adequate to surf the internet. I connected it to the internet a few months ago to download some updates and the processor was pegged at 100% for the entire web browsing session. Is it really necessary to bloat every single web page with assloads of javascript and AJAXy shit? What happened to the days of static web pages that a Pentium 90 could render in less than a month? My brother's Pentium 4 desktop has trouble surfing the web now.Does no one have any "your computer is crap" versions of web pages anymore?

I use Firefox, but IE6 is the default at work.I love when I hear office chit chat about IE having over 90% market share. Then followed by "you should develop in firefox, because it will just work in IE

http://forabeautifulweb.com/blog/about/universal_internet_explorer_6_css/The Universal IE6 CSS file (http://code.google.com/p/universal-ie6-css), a great idea that's a lot better than redirecting users to a stupid download page. Too bad no client would ever allow it to be put into use.[Edited on May 21, 2009 at 5:33 PM. Reason : ]
