After purchasing a car, do we both need to go to the DMV to do tags/title info or just myself?

Just the holder of the title...just you. This is assuming you transferred the title when the money changed hands, which most smart people do in the presence of a notary, usually at a bank.[Edited on April 2, 2009 at 1:53 PM. Reason : ]

^ yes, this will happen. thanks. Also, once i get the title & insurance coverage can i drive it to the DMV or do i need to wait?

Drive it.I drove a non-registered BMW up to Raleigh from Johnston Co. with no plates and was fine. As long as you've got insurance, you're OK.

yeah, #1 thing is insurance. notarized title and proof of insurance and money is all you need to get a tag and transfer the title to you

a north carolina title has to be notarized twice. once at the top for the transfer (from seller to you) and once at the bottom ifor your application for a new title.most places (i usually go to the bank) will notarize the top part (transfer) if just the seller is there. if you dont have the bottom notarized you can have it done at dmv. it is around $5 and cash only for the notary (plus the title transfer fee and taxes, which you can write a check for)dmv will ask for your insurance company and policy number
