Just wondering if anyone else on here has received a letter from their landlord stating they have to now pay $10.00 when they renew their lease at their current apartment place. I got a letter today stating that if I renew, I have to pay $10.00 more on my lease due to this being charged to the apartment complex by the City of Raleigh. I was wondering if this is only occurring at my apartment complex or if other people are seeing this as well. Thanks for any information and yes I know it is only $10.00 but I was hoping that someone else could give me their opinion on this matter. Thanks!!

The landlord only falls under the prop ordinance if they have properties that have 'legal' troubles.This fee was intended to be covered by the landlord, unless you as the tenant, are the one that caused their problems.Also, is this $10 a month?The prop ordinance is $500 a year (IIRC) for each UNIT that the landlord owns.You should be able to google: prop ordinance, Raleigh, NCand get all the info you want.[Edited on March 20, 2009 at 7:53 PM. the fee may have been "intended" to be covered by the landlord, but every landlord interviewed before the ordinance passed, said they would pass it on straight to their tenants.and why wouldn't they? liberals are stupid - they always think this kind of shit will be absorbed by the businesses.

There was organized opposition to this before it passed but it was weak. It applies to every property in Raleigh city limits. The second post is wrong. It is $30 per property and $10 per additional unit for multiple unit properties. I made a couple of threads about it but no one seemed to care until they started getting letters from their landlord. It is basically a huge tax so the city will have a database of rental properties and it is supposed to pay for the administration of said database.

Str8BacardiL- sorry about the repeat topic but I searched for it and could not find it on the message board. I was not here last summer so I guess I must have missed the topic then and I have not been keeping up with the news that much until I received the letter on Fri. Again, my fault for not being more up-to-date with what is going on in the city. Master_Yoda- The apartment complex has well over 200 units at my best guess. I know that they are passing it on directly but just wanted to see if anyone else has heard from their apt. people about this increase in their contracts or if it was just my apt. complex since we have a completely new staff and manager.

Every apt unit does not fall under the PROP ordinance.I would know, as I rent units. I don't have to deal with the ordinance unless my tenants do something stupid.I don't feel like digging out all the paperwork I got on the subject though.

So does the whole complex fall under the ordinance if only one unit in the complex has "legal" issues? If that's the case, probably every complex with a significant number of college students, plus most larger complexes period, is going to get snagged. Did anyone think landlords are going to eat thousands of dollars in costs (for 100+ unit complexes)?
