So we won our last conference title in football in 1979 and our last conference title in men's basketball in 1987. The following schools have won at least one conference, or national title in football or basketball since we last did in 1987. Some have won multiple titles between both sports. This just in: we suck
3/12/2009 10:38:08 PM
Very depressing, though not suprising.
3/12/2009 10:54:23 PM
who is worse?Baylor?
3/12/2009 10:55:38 PM
I would hope Minnesota, DePaul, and Vandy.

I will say that Mississippi State only won 1 SEC basketball title after we won one in 1987, so if you count our title then we are tied with them.
3/12/2009 10:58:56 PM
That's great news.

I'm an NC State and Cubs fan.
3/12/2009 11:05:28 PM
All this being said, I would think that we have a better chance of winning the conference in football much sooner than basketball considering the state of both our programs and the rest of the conference. So we are looking to break this streak when, this year, 2010....?

3/12/2009 11:06:35 PM
DePaul is a BCS school?
3/12/2009 11:07:46 PM
True, but DePaul played in conference usa when huggins was still at cincy and they were pretty nasty.[Edited on March 12, 2009 at 11:09 PM. Reason : .]

We're a huge public university in medium-sized city in a highly-populated mild weather state. We've got great facilities, lots of rich donors and tons of fans.We have no excuseWe're a fucking joke[Edited on March 12, 2009 at 11:09 PM. Reason : Oh, yeah, we play in the ACC too]
3/12/2009 11:08:56 PM
^ now if I had said that...I heard this from a guy at the game tonight who was sitting beside me:"when did you all join the ACC?" and "you just a few years to get the program established"[Edited on March 12, 2009 at 11:11 PM. Reason : d]
3/12/2009 11:09:25 PM
Well congratulations on sitting beside a retardEven being the disgrace that we are, you can't blame us for that guy's ignorance
3/12/2009 11:13:24 PM
he was from "THE U"
3/12/2009 11:17:54 PM
guys, it's just college athletics. i love it as much as anyone here, but what the hell? it's not a tragedy that we suck. it is what it is.
3/12/2009 11:19:42 PM
So, what? Just shut down sports talk? No point in discussing anything now?
3/12/2009 11:20:48 PM
3/12/2009 11:21:34 PM
^^ no, but every thread these days are people crying about how it's unjust that we're bad.
3/12/2009 11:33:24 PM
Where in this thread is someone crying about injustice?
3/12/2009 11:43:03 PM
3/12/2009 11:44:49 PM
I think (and correct me if I'm wrong here) that he is sad because we suck. Maybe you have some alternate definition of injustice...?
3/12/2009 11:46:33 PM
come on, are we going to play semantics here Ernie? you're better than that.
3/12/2009 11:47:29 PM
Look, if there's someone saying that we've been cheated out of a championship, or that we "deserve" a championship for some reason or another, then they're crying about injustice. All we have here is a bunch of dudes who are sad because of their school's pathetic athletic program. Nothing wrong with that.
3/12/2009 11:49:20 PM
no see that's the thing, people aren't sad, they're angry. fire lowe, fire fowler, someone has to go for these atrocities.
3/12/2009 11:52:03 PM
I still don't see how that's crying about injustice. And, to a reasonable extent, there's really nothing wrong with giving the boot to the people responsible for failing to bring the program out of the shitter.
3/12/2009 11:54:16 PM
i'm all for firing fowler, but this isn't SFN. we don't need to repeat the same stats over and over and over.
3/12/2009 11:56:28 PM
I can agree with that. And I'm pretty sure this list has been posted before (with baseball championships added in), but it's Big4Country. The guy's a bit slow.
3/12/2009 11:58:47 PM

We may never be competitive with Duke and Carolina in basketball ever again. Wake, who knows. Maybe not with them either. All that aside it would be nice, and achievable, to pull ourselves out of the bottom third in the conference in at least one watchable sport.
3/13/2009 8:25:27 AM
^ I agree. For those of you familiar with my recent posts, don't mistake my optimism and "giving coaches/players/etc the benefit of the doubt" attitude for an "acceptance of mediocrity." Nothing could be farther from the truth. State has a great academic program, a huge fanbase, excellent facilities and an enviable basketball history. I don't "accept" State being Duke and UNC's doormat. Never have and never will.True State's overall record against its Tobacco Road rivals is an eyesore no matter what time period you look at, but the Pack is most certainly had the 3rd-most success in the ACC historically. We're in the best conference and we have a huge fanbase that spends $texas$ every year watching even BAD Wolfpack teams. No one's should EXPECT Lowe or anyone else to start beating the Tarholes or dookies immediately, but ALL of us should expect progress toward that goal. Lowe has at least next season to prove himself. If he fails to develop his incoming talent, then I'll understand him getting booted. But for now I'm just going to deal wuth the fact that we've got a promising but under-performing coach that deserves a shot to prove that the predecessors' recruits, instead of coaching quality, have in fact been the underlying problem.

^The list was schools that have won titles after 1987 in football, or men's basketball. Right now Marquette and Depaul play Big East basketball and have yet to win a conference title, or national title while doing so. Right now it looks like Marquette has a better chance at win the BEC, or NCAA's than we do at winning the ACC, or NCAA's. Notice how I also listed SMU, TCU, and Houston who won SWC football titles after 1987 before that league split and joined C-USA, The Big 8, and SEC.[Edited on March 13, 2009 at 12:49 PM. Reason : .]
