I have a Dell Inspiron Laptop 6000 that I got for free from work. I put 2gb in it and was wondering if putting a 7200 harddrive in it would help things even more. I saw a 80gb 5400 on dells website for 80 bucks. My quesiton is are there any 7200 hardrives you can recommend that will work in this laptop at a decent price compared to the 5400 from dell?

^ not significantly on the first count, arguably not true on the secondi put a 320gb 7200rpm drive in my HP laptop and only marginally sped up the system...unless you find a great deal AND you want more space (as it was in my case), i'd pass[Edited on February 26, 2009 at 2:17 PM. Reason : .]

^ there's nothing the least bit special about your laptop that it would matter what you choose EXCEPT IDE or SATAi'm not going to look it up, but if it's an IDE, don't bother upgrading...if it's SATA, any SATA will work

^ yeah I can look it up myself I just didn't know if someone had a specific brand or model they would get.

in my quest for a new laptop i've read about serious issues with the seagates 700.11 series crapping out.the 7200 that evan noted appears to be more reliable.

the 6000 series only has an IDE controller. not really worth upgrading, imo. get a new laptop, that thing is ancient.there is no specific hard drive that works best with your model of laptop, if it fits and the connector fits, it'll work fine. hard drives aren't really very vendor specific in regards to the system they're in.

I bought one of the bad Seagates at Tiger Direct last week. I asked the pimply-faced dude behind the counter if these were part of the recall and he shrugged and said, "probably". Sure enough it was, but I flashed the firmware and so far, so good.
