Clemson engineering students created a device to measure the intensity of slam dunks. They compare it to measuring the speed of a pitch in baseball. So far I think it is only being used at Clemson home games, and Sykes has the most intense dunk at 30 G's.http://www.clemson.edu/newsroom/articles/top-stories/basketballdevice.php5

has potentialthey should call it the darrell dawkins scale

clemsowned

if they were any good at programming that 15 seconds would be <1 second
2/24/2009 4:53:57 PM
that shit would be the heat. You'd have to start retiring jerseys based on this statistic alone.____So, completely new question:Who is the most intense dunker of NC State B-Ball History? As good as he was, it's not David Thompson, boys and girls. My vote is Kenny Inge or Damon Thorton.

I wonder what JJ Hickson would throw down.

sweet, more stuff to turn basketball into an exhibition rather than a game.

15 seconds is pretty damn slow.\/Don't have to be a cook to know that something tastes like shit.[Edited on February 24, 2009 at 5:12 PM. Reason : ]

i know, they should be using the faster one that you built
2/24/2009 5:09:37 PM
If I'm understanding the function of their device correctly, the most intense "dunk" would be someone bricking their failed tomahawk jam off the front of the rim.
2/24/2009 5:19:51 PM
be nice until someone breaks a finger or hand or whatever trying to dunk harder
2/24/2009 5:30:03 PM
So Cedric Simmons would be #1 then.
2/24/2009 5:30:57 PM
one thing is for sureKobe could definitely dunk harder than Jordan*awaits vonjordan3's response*
2/24/2009 5:41:02 PM
dweedle is right, this could create more injuries, but i wouldnt put fault on it...just the reason of giving the option of players to act stupid and try to dunk too hardcedric would not win, he never slammed the rim down, just smacked the ball in there really fasthickson always brought the rim down, i would vote him to have the record at nc state
2/24/2009 5:41:26 PM
I bet Simon Harris could make that thing talk.

more intense dunk != better dunk

I saw "drunks", sorry.

^ a breathalyzer ??
2/24/2009 6:53:24 PM
yeah, I was wondering what as "new" about it

clemson actually invented this in about 1996, jut took another 13 years for them to have an exciting enough team to actually use the device

Does it subtract points if you miss, a la Courtney Fells?
2/24/2009 11:36:54 PM
does this device measure NtF?(Nuts to Face)
2/24/2009 11:49:38 PM
cedric simmons is the authority on missed dunks

So, they're saying that Sykes got high enough above the rim to allow him to accelerate the ball downward with a force of 30 G's? I think it needs a new accelerometer, or needs recalibration.[Edited on February 25, 2009 at 12:48 AM. Reason : k]

^^Nah I don't think so but CJ Williams missed one. Ishmail Muhammad from G Tech had some pretty thunderous dunks. That video makes me miss Cam. He had some talent but seemingly couldn't put it together ALA Fells.

2/25/2009 9:28:10 AM
This would at least explain why it takes 15 seconds.
