So I was thinking about CADing out a muffler similar to a flowblaster design and constructing it from scrap/excess steel at work. What all risks are involved? I'm not subject to OBD II, so I don't think that hurts me. Can I MIG weld seams or do they have to be TIG welded?

unless you can flow and resonance model/test, i would stick to this design:

do you cut threads on a lathe, too (even though you can just buy a threaded rod, or barring that, use a die)?

I have access to CFD software, but no acoustic testing

I'm not trying to create anything new; I'm just trying to construct something similar to a current design that I can make for free

so you want to spend hours making an inferior quality product that you could just as easily purchase? sounds white trash enough for me

why is this forum so non supportive of any "disposal income" or "disposal time" home brew projects?

who cares if he can buy a flow master for 20$ when he can try to build one for free? i guess i just don't understand the constant negativity.

why buy a steak when you can raise a cow in your backyard for 2 years and slaughter it yourself?

Well, luckily no one considers acoustics when it comes to muffler design.

it'd be different if he were doing something new, spending a rediculous amount of time and resources to copy something that is reasonably priced is just retarded

could i make mountain dew if i aquired all the ingredients and a carbonator? yes, do i still buy it? yes

You come across as the type to actually endorse this behavior. You could pull the poor brute with a giant TRUCK with chrome RIMS (assuming you had not just freshly waxed it).

Try it! I'm probably the only other poor soul in the garage that would do something like this. I would also say that TIG is unnecessary for what you are wanting to do. Bear in mind that all you will be doing is "hands on sound tuning" with the project - there's nothing wrong with that, but believe you me that you will not gain anything over any R&D done by the various exhaust companies out there.

I would also recommend this book:

as a good read, and basis for your "thoughtful" design. There is one model shown in the book that I want to attempt to emulate, an open chamber muffler, whose open volume design is intended to dissipate sound energy without being a detriment to flow. The case is oblong, of a calculated volume, with tapered ends for the inlet and outlet - which are on opposite sides. I'll try to whip up a quick model to better explain-

It's hard to tell, but the I/O are aligned to the outside, and the case is slightly larger than the attaching nipples
