It's about to suck worse

--

The third phase of the Rocky Branch Creek restoration project has been funded and is scheduled to begin Monday, February 16. This project will impact parking availability in two primarily "C" parking lots: Central Campus Lot (behind Student Health) and Carmichael Gym both in the construction phase and with some long-term parking loss. (View attached rough maps for contractor staging areas).

We anticipate approximately 107 parking spaces will be affected in the Central Campus Lot and 42 spaces in the Carmichael Lot during the construction phase. When the project is completed (estimated for December, 2009), 19 spaces will be permanently lost in Central Campus Lot with 37 spaces permanently lost in the Carmichael Gym Lot.

That blows. I might as well give up trying to go to the gym after work, because even with the parking the way it is, I've had to wait > 10 min. for a space the last 3 times I've gone in the 5:30 to 7:30 PM range. Either that or start taking the wolfline from my office to the gym and then back to my car. (No, I'm not going to walk there, unless you consider the Flex building to the gym "convenient walking distance." I don't.)

They've also started construction on Partners Way Parking Deck II over on Centennial.

I've tried that without much success before. Maybe I just hit it at a busy time.

I suppose that might work. Sigh.

That's less than a mile. Some incline for sure.

On a nice day, that walk would be...nice.

The crappy part would be the walk back if you're all exhausted. Snag the bus, I guess.

You should try it. It might not be as long as you think.

The lounge is not chit chat #2.

BTW, the University is getting a REALLY good deal on the stream restoration. IIRC, the bids came in about 50% under the initial budget.

Yes, Coliseum deck is a good option that I tend to forget. No, 2 minutes won't kill me. Yes, I should try to walk from Flex at least once before I reject that idea. I do realize that it's a little silly to complain about walking to the gym when the weather is getting nice and the walk could be seen as a warm-up to the workout.

Sorry for the thread semi-derail! This is about parking, not about me being lazy.

It'd be nice if they'd do the sane thing and make it so C permits can park in the Reynolds Deck, but that's unlikely.

However, if I'm reading this ( http://www2.acs.ncsu.edu/trans/Library/Permit_Grid.pdf ) right, it might mean it's time to try and turn my C permit in for a U for just that reason...

Ya think?
You all are talking about going to the gym. So, you need a warm-up anyway....
I've jogged or biked to the gym nearly every time I've gone. You do not need to park close to it.

Come on you guys. Pick your battles. This ain't one.

I give up on you college kids. A few years ago, there was an uproar over a small pavilion that would have been built in an underused part of the Court of Carolinas. Now, they want to remove 2 parking lots to restore a stream and everyone is pissed about losing parking. You'll have an increase in green space and a nice greenway, but people are hugging parking spaces like they're sacred. Its not like they're digging up your ancestor's graves, folks. They're just a few parking spaces.

All I got to say is I hope they dont cut all those trees down to do it, which I think they are...

Its fine now back there. They honestly dont need to do anything with that section.

You obviously haven't looked at the stream up close then, or don't understand why they are doing it. As it is now, the man-made channeling of the stream is eroding the fuck out of the stream bank behind the health center. The plan is to de-channelize by creating more natural meandering of the stream and also somewhat of a floodplain similar to the area between Pullen and Morrill and the section upstream of Dan Allen. This will slow down erosion rates and looks a hell of a lot nicer...seriously, go behind the Health Center and look at all of the asphalt and bricks and shit that are in that section of the stream.

now that, my friends, is a solution

Probably good for NCSU to fix the waterway, no matter what the cost is to parking.

Y'all bitch at them for not building more parking decks 5 years ago.

that stream needs to be fixed

the sections they have completed are functioning well, check them out

i dont understand why students complain about stream restoration

alot of those trees back there need to eb cut down because they are invasive, and there are trees that are better able to maintain the integrity and grade of the streambank

yeah, isn't a pretty important tributary to crabtree? like vitally important to proper storm water drainage and other runoff in that part of town? maybe we'd rather just deal with some flooding every time it rains vs. losing some parking spaces... big picture people.

[Edited on February 16, 2009 at 10:32 PM. Reason : maybe it won't take a week for the intramurral fields to dry out now.]

The student health lot is further away from the new section of the gym, and its basically the same distance as the entrance to the old part, so what is the big deal?
