I've got a 2005 dyna super glide custom... It has vance and hines slip ons right now that just don't do it for me. I want louder and more bass. I was thinking about some vance and hines "big radius" or "longshots". Anybody have any experience with other of those?

LOUD PIPES SAVE LIVES
2/4/2009 2:31:16 PM
Amen to that brother. Thats one of the reasons I want my bike to sound like ten grizzly bears firing .50 caliber machine guns into a tornado. Also, I want to be able to knock loose teeth out of small children's mouths from fifty feet away.

unfortunately, even that doesn't deter some space cadet drivers. a guy ran a stop sign into me a couple of years ago, and i was riding a straight piped V twin and had two bright automotive type projector lights on bright that aimed right into cars.

I totally don't buy the loud pipes save lives shit. If you were so concerned with people noticing you for safety purposes, you could paint your bike fluorescent yellow, which I'm willing to bet you won't. Not to mention, most people that ride harleys wear half shells and regular leathers when much safer options are avaliable. I don't know that you do that, it's just a generalization. I mean, If a guy wants a loud ass bike, I'm cool with that, but I just think it's lame when people do it under the guise of "loud pipes save lives." As someone who rides and love all bikes, I just don't understand the fascination with retardly loud pipes. They just annoy the fuck out of everyone in the general vicinity. Do us all a favor and stick with the V&H slip-ons, I'm sure they're plenty loud.

you do realize he could be joking, and is looking to TWW for advice and application

Either way, my abrasive opinion stands. If OP is joking, there are still legions that would agree whole-heartedly with his statement. I didn't mean for it to sound so dickish, it's just something that's always annoyed me.

my recommendation is that you buy a honda or yamaha

get a quality 2-1 pipe (supertrapp or thunderheader) stay away from big diameter pipes on vtwins they tend to cause reversion problems, then have it tuned with the pipe on it. sound is merely a byproduct....

the reinharts were loud, but that wasn't what made them so great. the pitch was just perfect or something.

If you want loud pipes for safety's sake get some that point forward so people in front of you can hear too.

Catzor... You had better believe "loud pipes save lives" for two reasons. 1. I don't give a shit if i'm in someone's line of sight, people don't look for bikes, they look for cars. A thundering sound they aren't used too will shake them up and make them look a little harder. I say this because... 2. I have a buddy that drives semi-trucks and he agrees. The blind spots in big rigs are much larger than you or I could even imagine. They appreciate it when they can detect your presence with another sense. At the same time, I can appreciate that you think loud bikes are annoying. I'll admit I want my bike loud for reasons other than safety. Namely, there is nothing better than pulling up to some dipshit that thinks his honda is cool with his coffee can mufflers then deafening him with a V twin while blowing his ass off the line.

^I don't give a shit that you think that they save lives, because your shit could be thundering the windows of buildings a mile away and the retards that aren't going to notice you, then proceed to hit you, are still going to ignore the fact that you're there. If you're going to buy pipes, be honest, and say they're because you want your shit to be loud as fuck, not because you think it'll save your ass.

I think loud pipes are primarily personal preference, with a modicum of safety added. Mine certainly are. I think the margin of safety kind of depends on the bike, as well. Harleys are never quiet from the factory. Louder pipes aren't going to increase the margin of safety for that particular bike. Metric cruisers, like my Star, are whisper quiet from the factory, and the factor of safety is definitely increased for them. I love the ShortShots I have, as much for the sound as for the weight reduction. Stock exhaust is ricockulously heavy.

From what I see, your ~1500cc Harley would get stomped by a second and a half by Honda's 1500cc Valkyrie. Not to mention it's 3 second loss to honda's cbr600rr, which is 2/5's of the displacement. Your bike is overpriced, heavy, slow, and poorly engineered.[Edited on February 11, 2009 at 5:09 PM. Reason : .]
