Is Daemon Tools still the best utility of this sort? I've heard that newer version contain spy/ad-ware. I don't have any evidence to back up this claim, it's just what I've heard.

I think by default, Daemon tools tries to install some sort of toolbar type shit (at least it has in the past, I dunno about recently) but it's something that you can easily uncheck. I've used some version of Daemon tools for the past 3-4 years and never had any problems that I was aware of.
