I got a Chevy S-10 I need to replace the alternator, and therefore need the belt off. Any one know of a way to get the tensioner to release without a bar wrench, as I dont have one.

Son, I've done this slightly less than a hundred times (MAYBE), and half the time I used a fucking combination wrench. And half the time I used a 3/8" drive ratchet. Another half of the time, I used a prybar, strategically placed. And still another half of the time, I used the long bar tool with socket inserts that they make specifically for the job.

there are about 50 damn ways to do it, all you gotta do is move the arm back less than an inch, most of the time a wrench on the pulley bolt will do it
