I've had an older ipod for years and just upgraded to a newer one... is there anything I have to do aside from plug in the new one and let itunes populate it? will songs that I bought be affected?

do you manage all your music in iTunes already (i.e. you don't do something stupid like put your music on your iPod, then delete it all from iTunes)? if so, yeah, don't worry about it. Plug your new iPod in, it will show up as a new device. Then you'll have to go through again and tell it what playlists to sync, or all your music or whatever, and it will do it.

in the past I had done that to switch all my files from one computer to another...
1/27/2009 8:30:20 PM
soooo... will I be ok?
1/27/2009 10:14:24 PM
what exactly are you scared of?just plug the new ipod in. it's not like it's going to delete all your iTunes music or anything

that it will say some shit like "the itunes purchases on this computer are not authorized for this ipod blah blah blah"
1/27/2009 10:46:31 PM
then all you have to do is authorize it for that ipod.
1/27/2009 11:16:55 PM
does it ask you to do that?
1/27/2009 11:20:29 PM
i wouldn't think it would.if it does, just log in to the itunes store and it will renew your authorizations for the songs you purchased.

so what keeps one person from buying songs off of itunes and everyone else just copying them over to their ipods?
1/27/2009 11:26:03 PM
Yeah, itunes authorizes that iPod to work for your computer and for your songs.I imagine it'll ask you to deauthorize the old iPod before you work with the new one or something. I haven't gotten that involved with iTunes since I've only had one iPod myself (3rd gen 40gb, non-photo). Apple didn't design this software to throw out all the songs you bought when you bought another one of their products. They'd be out of business if that were the case.

^^ Nothing really. But, you can't transfer the purchased music off the iPod to another computer without the account information (and authorizing that computer, of which only 5 computers can be authorized at a time), and if you then try to sync the iPod to your computer, it will erase the songs before loading yours on.
